Battery lite repair time

The battery light has been on since I bought the tractor in Oct. Had to put in new battery when I bought it, he had a small car battery in it. Well last night I was using it and it ran fine, I parked it for a few minutes then went back to it and "CLICK" dead battery. So I guess it's time to find out whats wrong. Can't believe I've made it this long using it everyday with no problems! Going to check the genny output and if thats good I'll replace the VR. Any other suggestions GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks in advance Mike

I can't believe anyone would use a tractor daily for 7 months with the battery light on and then be suprised when it won't start.

If I'd done the same thing, I sure as heck wouldn't post it here. I'd be trying to make sure no one else knew.

ike, I believe this is the gen/reg/warning light ckt for your tractor & believe that I remember that the WL and D (Dynamo or Armature) are common. Given that, if gen does not output a voltage near same as battery, then light is powered by battery via switch & lights. If the gen field isn't properly controlled by reg, then 'light', so yes, you have a potential of either gen or reg or both as failed. Since the field in gen is shown as having one end grounded (known as "B-CKT" generator). you can apply battery power to FIELD terminal and measure D-terminal voltage, using analog voltmeter & determine if gen is generating or not. If it is, then look to regulator. All assuming yours is as pictured.
