Finally got those derned blades pulled off that Yardman mower.

They had used lock-tight at the factory; took the rosebud and a healthy dose of an impact wench to bust the silly things loose.

Bad news is that the cost of three blades and three belts came to $172.77. Think maybe I should get a herd of goats :>(

Alan and others, I was just wondering what kind of steel they use for those blades. I have a White and if I hit something and bend a blade there is no straightning them, they seem like they are spring steel and even if you get them straight they don't seem to want to stay that way. My experience with them is once they are bent you might as well buy new ones. Anybody have that problem?

Yea I took the blades of my rotary cutter. Had to get the bolts red hot and then a 3/4 ratchet with a 6 ft. piece of pipe.

Just got a new blade for a little John Deere RX-95 I just bought off CL to mow the dog yard. Surprised it was only $20 from Deere. One of the ends broke off the old one. Talk about shake! Ended up welding a nut on the bolt head and cranking it out with a Thundergun. I don't think the blade had ever been off this!

They are heat treated so may be very similar to spring steel. If blades get damaged, replace them. Never try to repair or modify mower blades. Dave

friends; Ya'll need to take those blades off a little more often. I take mine off and sharpen them about every two weeks. My Craftsman mower has the blades with the star shaped center and they can be taken off with a 3/8 ratchet while holding the belt with the other hand.
however I will admit that my previous mower ( made in Lawrenceburg Tnn.) was a little more dificult to remove. but a little Sears impact wrench would take them off with no trouble.
And I might add, mower blades in the USA are made from a mild steel so that they won't shatter and send pieces of metal flying all over, and that is the reason that they need sharpened a little more often.

look at prices at "Pete's Small Engine" http://www.lawnmowerstuff.com/ I orderd 4 belts for my MTD for $93 with shipping. They were at my door in 5 days and I live in WV where next day air takes 3 days to receive.

I picked up a box of those blades not long ago at an auction. Probably 8 or so pair of them and gave around $2 for all of them. I have 2 or 3 mowers that they fit so figure I am $$ ahead and having them makes it east to keep a shape set on hand

That turned out to be "another" story. She won't use the IH 'cause it doesn't have the hydrostat. :>(

Plus, it needs a drive belt too. :>(

I'll second that. Stay sharp better than original at much better price. Good place to do business with too.
