LONG ROAD TRIP- TRACTOR Hauling

I"m BEAT!

Just did a round trip of 1,798 miles, went with just my pickup and flatbed trailer from central Nebraska to eastern Indiana to pick up a John Deere 4410 tractor w/ 72" belly mower, then jogged up to southern Wisconsin to pick up a Farmall Cub with Woods 59 belly mower. (The JD is for my work and the Cubby is for me) That"s a looooong trip having a trailer bounce you around) but as I say...."A tough day hauling tractors is better than a good day in the office!" By the way.....don"t take a short-cut trying to haul tractors around Chicago.....give me those country roads any day over idiot drivers!

I can sympathize. I made several trips with different trailers between NE Ohio and Central Maine, comparable distances to your trip when I moved up here. I pay attention to my loads for weight an balance and all the trailers haul pretty well, but I've gotta say that the trip I hauled the tractors (a SuperC and a BN) out on the gooseneck (even havin' to drive a gear lower that normal) was about the easiest. Makes for a long day, lemme tell ya. Etch-a-Sketch wouldn't have enough knobs on it for a one-day shot if I'd been commercial.

I 74 west to I 39 north if you need to go any farther east in Wisconsin then it aint worth going. Or just steal an e-z pass then its 70mph around 294 at 3 am . Other than that no there is NO GOOD way around Chicago just head through town and look like you're ready to run over anything or any one that gets in your way.

When traveling west I would go as far as Gary, Ind., put up for the night there and leave early the next morning to get around Chicago....driving around there is the pits. I have hauled several tractors through that area and when not in a hurry I have dropped way south on secondary roads and skirted chicago. It was longer but quite pleasurable.
Scotty, where in Maine are you? I'm up near Lincoln.

Last week I made an 1,100 mile trip for a combination of business and pleasure and to pick up a tractor. I have hauled two of this same model tractor on this trailer, but as I walked up to it I could see that it was WIDE. I ended up leaving it and just taking the hard-to-find parts that I really wanted. I had my mid-sized of three trailers, it tends to smooth out the harsh ride of the F-350.

Driving in Chicago reminds me of something a semi driver told me about driving the big trucks..."if you can drive in Chicago, you can drive anywhere!"

Way around Chi town from I 80 go north on I 355 toll rd to I 90 toll rd and away you go. Stay off the tri state in Chi Town (toll road) I 294. Just as you leave Chi on I 80 into IN you are on the Boarman Rd. Small bit of traffic till about I 65. Ifin you want to miss all of Chi town At US 47 and I 80 go north till I 90 and north. I 355 is newer.

Yep, Last White Castle is on the East-most end of I-90/294 (Skyway)..!!
Plenty room for Big Large Cars to park..!!

Most crazy drivers I believe I ever saw were there...looking to collect on your insurance, if ya have a nice looking truck, they figure ya have Ins..!
3 Rush-hours per Day..usually leading to Grid-Lock for an hour or more...
Low Bridges and those people don't have a Clue how they get to work..!!
They can't give directions to their own business and get you within 5 miles of it..!!
Glad we ended up with air-ride..at least I could let the suspension down and get under a few more bridges..!!
Spring trailers (13'6") are a real pain, there..might get "in" loaded, but not get "out"..!!
Used to run into Wisc. a lot, picking up raw Paper..Kaukawna, DePere, Appleton, Green Bay, etc..

It cost me more to go through Chicago with a pickup and trailer than it cost me to go across the whole state of NY on the thruway. It cost me $4.75 just to cross one bridge!! I went through at midnight and it was bumper to bumper with all the construction. I took the scenic route on the way back.
