Hi i was wondering if any one could tell me any thing about a small winch to fit on to my dexta tractor.ihave been looking at s/h hydrulic or pto type winchs off say an early landrover. would dexta tractor hyd / or pto be able to run these, and would they be handy enought to fit. i have thought of an electric winch but idont think an old tractor wireing would be up to it. Depending on what you think you will use it on, an elecric winch may be fine. They connect direct to the battery, so really don't affect any old wiring. I put one on the front of my neighbors Farmall BN when I converted it to 12V. Works fine, he uses it to pull wood out of the brush when he cuts firewood. It will pull a pretty good sized tree trunk or limb. Pulled himself out when he got stuck a couple of times too. Very handy.

Thanks for the brainstorm! What if you used a 2" receiver like you would bolt under a truck bumper? Actually 2 of them. Be creative and install one on front and back then get a compact electric winch, mount it with a plate on 2" stock with a good cable setup. You could put it on the shelf when not needed and use it either on front or back of the tractor.

Now,
Paul from MI, what size winch did you use on your job?

I have a 2" receiver hitch setup that mounts on the 3pt and have my warn winch on a cradle that slides into the receiver hitch. Works for unstucking yourself, moving trees, pulling others out, etc.

Best part is the winch slides right out and onto the front or back of my truck (where it spends most of its time).

how much winch do you have? I don't want to spend a fortune on a maybe but see plenty of 2000# and 2500# ones within my consideration.

Thanks, Dave

I have a 20 year old 8k lbs warn winch because I wanted to be able to unstick my truck as well as tractor. I kept my eyes open and picked it up off CL for like $200-250. Has pulled numerous items over that weight and never failed, and if all else fails I can double the line pull with a snatch block.

Thanks lads for your thoughts, I might have to have another think of an electric winch. this might be enough for what i need, i suppose even if ihave the trailer on and loaded up the max weight would 5/6 ton plus drag on which ever mud hole or dich i get stuck in . what size of winch would you recomend for this type of weight.

The one we used was 2000#, I think from Harbor Freight. It had free spooling and a remote control on a 10' electric cable. He usually stands beside what he is pulling and uses the renmote to control the winch. I was always going to try to pull start the tractor with just for fun, but never tried it. Afraid I'd hit whatever I was hooked to.

Dave I know you're on the other side of the world, but just for talkings sake, I went to Sam's Club and bought a Champion 10,000lb winch, receiver mount included and a small snatch block for $300.

I can have someone send it to me in the worst case If I don't find something online.

Thanks for the tip.
