Im installing an alternator in a Case 1830 that didnt have one when I bought it. So I have the alternator with three wires from it the Big red one, the #1 and the #2 which are side by side. I have a amp meter that I need to put in this config somehow..I have looked on google but there are alot of different ways it seems to hook the #1 and #2. I know the big red one goes to the battery. after that give me some guidence. thanks

Here's two easy ways to do it, one uses an "idiot light" and one uses a diode in the "excite" circuit.

It would be easier to use a VOLTMETER, but if you MUST use an AMMETER the basics are that one terminal connects to battery power and the alternator and ALL electrical loads connect to the other side. (If the ammeter reads backwards, swap the leads between the terminals.)

onnect the big red one (BATT/alt output) to battery (probably not directly to battery post, but to tie point where all loads are sourced from battery). Connect #2 to BATT/alt output)..your big red wire. Connect #1 to a small light bulb such as a trailer side marker bulb. Connect the other side of that bulb to the side of ignition switch that is hot when Ignition is ON. Want an ammeter? It is connected in series with the wire supplying all loads from the battery (except the starter).

(quoted from post at 10:43:03 05/11/10) These drawings assume that it is a 10si alternator or a model with an INTERNAL regulator..
ell, Bill, help us out. How about posting some connection information about other alternators "with a big red wire and #1 & #2 side by side terminals"? Thanks.

When you said 1 & 2 that tells most anyone it's a Delco 10SI or 12SI pretty common for conversions, simple & easy to repair. Mad Electrical has kits and more info on their site under tech articles section there and why to go with 3 wire or 1 wire alternator.

Provided you do in fact have a delco alternator.. (Why would you use anything but, as previously stated, cheap, readily available, last a long time, so on).. Follow as Bob said. I was having problems with mine.. did as he instructed (from the same pictures) and it fixed me right up!!

Charges good, shuts off now, unlike before. Waiting a few more days to see if my drain goes away too.

Thanks again Bob!!

Thanks, Brad!

I'd like to think I give some useful advice around here, but it seems few guys ever agree with me or are successful following my advice. You must be one of the lucky ones! Thanks for the compliment.

Why use a three-wire alternator?
single wire alternators (converted Delco) are readily available and cost very little more if any than the three-wire varities.

1) At my local NAPA, 1 wires are approx. $30 more than a 3 wire

2) some things do not run fast enough to make the 1 wire alternator self-excite

3) Once you've bought one, you are stuck with it "NO RETURNS ON ELECTRICAL PARTS" is a common sign at nearly every part store.

4) Those so called "discount" part stores that have the high school kids at the counter will tell you there is no such thing.. Just like they'll tell you a alternator for a Chevy truck don't fit a tractor.. Or that they don't sell a 12v coil, they just sell coils that fit (model and brand here)

Yes, every now and then you'll meet a knowledgeable person at one of those stores.. but usually if they can't punch it in the computer, you're SOL

And yea, I'm just a young kid myself.
