I was mowing today trying to get caught up. I thought I smelled something different. Riding this tractor day after day, I get to know the smells, and sounds it makes. Then I herd the squeel of the alt. belt slipping over the pulley. The smell was from the last of the grease being burned out of the bearing. The alt bearing was locked up tight. I had only 1/2 hr to go. I loosened the belt so it just slipped over the pulley, but kept the coolant circulating. It worked good and the belt didn't get too hot. With just a few rounds to go for some reason the belt got shorter, and tightened on the pulley and I couldn't loosen it any more. It was time to go home anyway. Stan

You got lucky you got home. Belts and froze up pulleys do not mix well and can in turn cause you to walk home I know BTDT and that is no fun and then when that in turn causes a blown head gasket it makes for a very bad day which I have also seen

Several years ago I was coming home from returning the anhydrous applicator and the fan belt shredded and broke. I stopped thought about my options (no cell phones yet) jumped back on and took off. Keeping an eye on the temp gauge. It made it home and didn't even heat up that much. Thermocycle was working that day.

Many years ago my water pump jammed (But no leak) and broke the belt while I was on a unpopulated freeway about twenty miles from home. No way to contact anyone. I knew the battery would carry me so I watched the temp. until it dropped to the low end of the scale then started the engine and drove until it passed the operating temp. then stopped and cooled. It took five stops and forty-five minutes but I got the car and me home.
