There"s a crank hole on the front of my Farmall 560 diesel. I"ve never seen a crank for it. It badly needs an overhaul but until I get it done I want to know other ways to start it.

It takes another tractor to pull-start it. I have glow plugs and a block heater and Dad says if I plug it in an hour then use glow plugs and a charger to help spin the starter, eventually it"ll start - but i think that"s a lot of work for the starter.

What about a big belt pulley like from a belly mower and an electric motor on the drawbar and a long v-belt? Can a 2HP electric motor spin it enough to get it going?

I moved the tractor to my acreage and don"t have a second man to ride it and let out the clutch or another tactor to pul it and my little S10 pickups aren"t big enough to pull it so..

Any ideas? Thanks!

Sounds like it needs a rebuild. If it has any compression at all it should go with a decent set of batterys and working glow plugs.

The hole is there to run a shaft through to run a front mounted hydraulic pump. For the time being, take your dad's advise!! or get something that will start. As for your electric motor idea;??? It appears that you got a lot to learn about tractors and how gear reduction works.

I have a W560 that was overhauled with a new crank but it needs head work. When they got done with it they parked it and didn't get the antifreeze mixed up so it froze up inside somewhere. When you put water in it goes straight to the oil pan. I'd sell it if someone is interested.

the hole is there for a crank, which are hard to come buy.i have one for mine which comes in very handy when setting valves and adjusting timing. i think thats all these cranks were for, as you would never be able start a diesel with it.

In addition to 6 good glow plugs and a good electrical system so they can draw enough current to heat up you need to spin her over fast...

If it won't spin quickly with the current starter and battery setup then you need to hook 2 GOOD 12V batteries in parallel... This will maintain 12V but will give you the cold cranking capacity of both batteries added together. #0 or #1 battery cables are a must.

Make sure the starter is in proper working order also.

Hold those glow plugs on for a minute then let off the button and crank for 15 - 20 seconds or so... If it goes good.. if not hang onto those glow plugs for another minute and repeat...

If none of that works you can always resort to starting fluid but if you do... Under no circumstance should you so much as touch the glow plug button...

Going to run you a grand minimum for parts to major it and do the head... Labor is extra...
