Anyone getting ready for haying?

It's been a very busy spring. I guess they all are...

Hard to believe it's almost May. I've got to plan some time into the schedule to get the hay equipment put online. Looks like cool weather and rain most of this week, so that might be the ticket to get it done!

That is a yes, no ,and sort of thing. I didn't ever unhook the MOCO last year so it is still hooked up to the Oliver 77 so that is about ready to go other then re-greasing things. The S88 is hooked up to the NH850 we picked up at an auction late this winter so it is ready to go other then oiling the chains. Not sure yet which tractor or tractors I'll use for the Square baler and the hay rake. Probably will use the D-17 for the balers and the WD45 or an Allis C for the one rake. Also need to pull out the old JD-B and make it work again

Thats actually on for today. Cool and rainy. Mowers are ready, going to put teeth in the wheel rake today, and service both round balers and the square baler. It needs a shim adjustment in the right knotter and the knives sharpened. Other than that, I think things are ready to go.

Son has been working on equipment. Had to put a new chain in the feeder rake on the baler. It had one attachement link that hooked on the raker bar that was broke. Son in law is a top notch welder so sent it to him in western Oklahoma to be built up and welded. Looks just like new. Lucky to have him for real critical work. He has been servicing the oil field and farmers in that area for many years.

Baled some last Thursday---3 bales out of the barn trying out a New Holland 310 we bought @ auction last Saturday. it worked fine, looks like we're ready when the hay is, maybe in a couple of weeks since we're getting rain yesterday and today here in S.E. Ohio. Keith

Tedder is in the shop being repaired. Battery for the tie mechanism on the K 260 needs to go on the battery minder.

James tested one of the mowers last week end.

Carb needs to be rebuilt for one of the 70's.

Need to pull both balers out and give them a check-out and greasing. One of the tires on K125 baler needs some air.

Not a lot to do, but at least one full day's work.

Learned to bale on a D15 when I was 14 years old. Still remember the drill- lever in neutral, PTO in gear, let out foot clutch (with other foot on the brake- it would creep forward otherwise- power director probably not adjusted quite right). Once baler is up to speed, forward on the lever, and you're in business. Loved baling with that tractor- engine was smoooooth!

Ya I like the D-17 for pulling the NH271 baler. Power director always wants to creep which is ok and is good for when you get to that place that the hay is real heavy

live in kentucky and have cut and baled 120 acreas of alf/oar grass hay the last two weeks, now just sittin back and watchin it rain.

Thats on my agenda today as its wet and rain is in the forecast this afternoon, need to pull the tongue out of the 488 haybine and weld it up thanks to a rock in the last field last fall. Also need to put a new spring in the round baler for belt tension and a few pickup teeth. square baler is at the dealer for new wear strips and a seal in the gear box.

Once I finish everything Nancy listed below, will put a new spring and chain on the 9ft JD 350 sickle mower.

Carburetor is being rebuilt by K & K for "Sam" our 51MT that pulls the JD 640 hay rake.

Carburetor is being rebuilt by K & K for "1011" our '53 Model 70 that will pull the hay tedder.

Carburetor was rebuilt by K & K for "15" our '53 Model 70 that pulls both KRONE bailers.

Will probably fertilize the hay meadow with 21-7-14 on Wednesday; 30%-40% chance of rain on Thursday night through Friday morning.

Will probably re-seed about four areas in the hay meadow on Saturday.

Every year, in January, I say I am going to get started on the haying eqpt. and have it ready for when the season starts. But what actually happens is that two weeks after I should be baling, I am working on the equipment.

O WOW,,,,You guys are way ahead a me,,,,,,Got at least another month a feeding left befor the critters hit the pasture,,,,,,,,,,,,Dont generally start cutting alfalfa till about July 4th ,,,,,going to seed another 30 acres to alfalfa if we ever get in the field,,,,,,,Had snow on the ground this morning but its all gone now,,,,,And i hope for good this year,,,

James I like that. That is the way you get things done, Nancy tells you so you take carbs and say "fix".

We always seem to get some really good haying weather the week before Memorial Day. Then the weather changes and seems to not be so good until the end of June. I always try to make the most dent in the first cutting about then.

We've finally fed out the last of the rounds we bought last fall. The hay we baled was gone in March. I've been taking it easy on the pastures since up until this last weekend the spring was very dry. Have been holding back on setting some of the animals like the sheep out. Now we're well supplied with rain and more on the way, so I'll get all the animals out of the hayshed this week. I sure look forward to seeing the hay supply grow rather than shrink!

Our PT-10 cracked the metal roller toward the end of the season last year, so it is now on its way to China (good thing scrap prices were up when I took it in). We replaced it with an IH 990 mower conditioner. So I'll be going from a 10' cut to a 7' cut. This might not work too bad as I cut some odd shaped fields and also have picked up a bunch of haying fields that require time on the road.

got the baler done next is the mower and then onto the rake
also built new back rack for the wagon
looking at about a month here so wathching it rain

Started cutting wheat for horse hay this morning finish up tommorow. If stays sunny with the wind blowing like has today will bale thursday. This is in Abilene Tx area.

Been thinking about it, but that's about as far as we've gotten. We still need to reinstall the tandem under our chopper box that got mangled last fall while doing corn, and then we need to look at our old chopper (Fox 3000) and see what that needs. Our Hesston 1014+2 should be ok, just needs a little grease and oil.

We rent a bagger and put first crop in a bag. Much easier than trying to bale it all...

Oh sure - I'm ready, all I need to do is
Put new rock guards on the mower
Install a new tire on the tedder
Roundup some teeth for the rake
Oil change and tuneup the Wisconsin on the baler
I think there is a flat on the hay wagon too
:(

Still a little early, but I need to go ahead and cut a small field to sort out the problems left over from last year.

My Hesston 5580 rounder was having issues with forming belts slipping late last fall. That was hay actually cut too late and not dry. Need to make sure it will behave itself this spring, belts are as tight as I can reasonably get them.

Can't remember some of the rest, but know left some issues unresolved as wet as it was last fall. DOUG
