Can anyone advise me on adding turbocharger to JD 4240? Pros vs. Cons or anyone's experience with attempting to get a little more power would be helpful. Thanks

Knew a guy that put a turbo on a 4240. He added the 3 ring pistons during a rebuild, used the manifold and intake pipe off of a 4430, the turbo and outlet elbow off of a 4320 and a straight pipe to get it out of the hood without cutting the hood. Turned it to 150pto and it had over heating problems, turned it down to 135pto and put around 3,000 hours of field work on it that way. Had the power of a 4430 with a little better low end.

If you just add a turbo you will gain fuel economy but not power. If you want more power you have to increase fuel flow. Years ago I added M&W turbo chargers to 4020s and increased fuel to get more power. After rebuilding the motor twice I ended up getting a bigger tractor. We had the pyrometor but ended up getting a bigger radiator different fan and apecial oil pan to try to keep it running cooler. Looking back buying a 4320 would have been a smarter move but money was tight.

I was always told that adding a turbo won't gain you much without increasing the output of the injection pump. I'm sure someone will argue me on it, but it is WHAT I WAS TOLD. Not saying it's true or false.. just what I was told. I'd also recommend a pyrometer if adding a turbo and turning up a pump. When I had my case pump done (which also has a M&W turbo) they would only turn it up 10% of stock, and didn't even want to do that without me installing a pyro.. I told them wherever it is set it's been there for years and hasn't harmed anything so far.. but in this day and age, I'm sure it goes back to a L word.. Liability.
I know this post was probably of next to no help.
Brad
