Electric fences and deer

Got a question, will a electric fence keep deer away from garden? and if it does can I run 1 continous wire from about 6' high down to 3' then 1'.Wrapping four corner post then angling down to next course Mike

yes, but you have to attract them to it to get hit first, put up the fence at about 3 1/2 ft up, then do the peanut butter and foil trick, wrap the wire in foil, then spread peanut butter on it so they lick, works for coons as well, just not as high, when one gets hit they will all run, but dont put 1 up thinkin they cant jump it, and they need to be able to see it there, or they will run it down

Don't think you would have to lure them to the fence, they have the uncanny ability to detect if the fence is live, and if they don't then they are in for an experience.Erect it and observe the result, can always make adjustments later.

Last year we tried Monifillment Fishing line around our sweet corn patch. Three lines one about 12" off ground two more about 18" apart. didn't have trouble with deer but a bear walked right through it and smashed about one third of the patch.

I've had very good luck with the 1" horse tape type of electric fence placed 32" high all around my corn patch.

i have a continious wire around my garden knee high . works for me . once had tracks in the garden after a rain . one set at the wire another about 20 feet into garden and another about 20 feet diagionaly across the garden and out the garden . apparently did not stop to eat anything . watch out for weeds growing onto the wire . will short it out and deer will go in .

I do pretty much what you said, but I do spread peanut butter on the wires when I first put it up for the season. And I make sure to get the fence up early in the season before there is anything in the garden to tempt the deer. Once the deer start eating in your garden it much harder to stop them.

When we had sheep it was called "training them to the fence". Any animal can run right through an electric fence if they are moving fast and don't know that it is anything more than a thin wire, but when they know about the shock, that's what makes an electric fence work.

i am trying something different this year. i have a driveway monitor mounted on the leading edge of my garden from which the deer typically approach. this sends a signal to a receiver which can be located about 100 ft. away. i plugged a battery charger to which is connected to a 12v car alarm. once detected, the receiver energizes the battery charger which sounds the alarm. it is programmed to sound for 30 seconds. the receiver and charger is mounted in a 5 gal. plastic bucket turned upside down for protection from the elements and the alarm is attached to the side of the bucket. deer typically travel up a small ravine in the woods, past my pond and then to the garden, hopefully, the monitor, which has a wide beam, is placed in the direction of travel. the garden and alarm is located about 500 ft, from the nearest neighbor.

I just talked to two men who have placed a radio tuned to a news/talk show station, inside a bucket in their gardens and sweet corn. They both said they play it softly, run it 10 hours a night, change batteries monthly and the deer problems went away.

I use clover and/or peas planted nearby and the deer almost always prefer that area so my problems are almost nil.

I planted a clover patch next to the garden, and have a corn feeder nearby that goes off 3 times a day. They eat the corn and clover and don't bother the garden (knock on wood).
