Painting a galvinized gate?

I have a couple of old, but sound galvinized gates. They are rusted a bit, I am thinking of painting the gates. Will paint stick to them?

I know ICI paints has a special primer for galvanized metal-not sure if it is exterior rated, but I think it is. Once this is applied, you can topcoat with the paint of your choice. We have used it on new HVAC ductwork with great results!

The fact that the galvanized finish is weathered and slightly rusty will help the paint to stick. Sand the entired surface lightly and prime with a "galvanized metal primer" and you will be fine. It will last as well if not better than painting new bare metal.

You might have problems if there's holes in the zinc coating. Any gaps between the steel and zinc will cause bubbles in the paint after a year or so. Not the end of the world so use a primer for galv and cross your fingers.

Zinc Galv. Spray, the one by rustoleum seems to hold up well on bare mill finish mild steel, cleaned of oil, dirt, rust etc., same with the one by Arcair, cold zinc galv spray, which also meets federal spec's for cold applied spray galvanizing, the local welding supply house here sells that one.

Save a lot of time and $ and just sponze it down with 100% vinegar. Learned thsi in 1956 painting gal gutters for a painting contractor.

As Gordo and Dave says. Vinegar is the simple old time tried & true inexpensive method for painting galvanized metal. I understand the acid in the vinegar etches the galvanize and lets the paint adhere to it.

My Daddy was a painter, and told me that one time when I needed to paint the galvanized skirting I had put on my house. I had cut it out of new corrugated roofing.

I got a pump-up sprayer and sprayed it all down and after it dryed I painted it with latex house paint.

It was still good when I sold the house 10+ years later. None of it ever peeled off.
