Adaptable governer

I have a little 4 cyl import car engine I"d like to replace the bad Wisconsin with on my swather. Do any of you know of a governer that would be relatively easy to aquire and adapt to make this combo usable?

Surplus Center has some in stock right now.

Am I understanding correctly that it's a centrifugal unit but needs an oil source?
"4 bolt mount to engine block
(oil flows into face of governor)"

Or is it maybe oil flow controlled?

The oil is for LUBE.

It came from a direct-drive application where the lube oil was supplied by the engine so there's no shaft seal.

The belt-drive models have a shaft seal and lube fill, level check and drain plugs.

I think the oil flow is just for lube.
after thinking about it for some time I think you should be able to get one through your local auto parts store or farm equipment dealer, that way maybe you can see what your getting before you have to pay for it. different size engines will require different adjustments so you want to get one that closely matches your engine.

A governor off of a massey 300 or possibly a 410 gas combine might also work.. these should be belt driven.. I know the 300 is, 510 and 750 gas massey combines also have belt driven governors, and I believe a 4400 JD gasser would have a belt driven one (I think that's the JD that uses the 292 gm engine). I used to have one off of a 300, but I believe I have given it away to someone...

I don't know if a velocity governor would work for you or not.You could do some research starting here.

The salvage yards are full of belt drive self contained governors on most any piece of equipment using automotive engines converted to AG / industrial use. Self propelled Windrowers / swathers and gas engine combines are prime candidates. Usually Pierce/ Hoof brand.
The limiting speed units have two weights, the variable speed ones usually have 4 weights.

I run a couple of chevrolet V8 powered Oliver's using salvage yard Hoof / Pierce governors.

I have always wondered if a cruise control mechanism could be adapted to work as a governor. Depending on what your engine is from, maybe it, or the vehicle it came from might have some or most of the parts already. There also used to be add-on kits for cruise control, but I haven't seen one for a long time.

The cruise control systems I have tinkered with used a magnet on the drive shaft and a detector very close to the spinning shaft to give the signal to control the electric/vacuum control unit. I don't see why the magnet couldn't be mounted on the vibration dampener with epoxy and the detector rigged somehow to get the signal from there.

But I haven't tried it, so I cannot say how well it might work. I would definitely have a kill switch handy in case RPMs got too high. Good luck!
