Totally OT but it is noisey big power engines

I know it is not tractor related by any means except I know most of the crew members of yesteryear war bombers were aboard doing their job and duty hoping to survive to make it back home to the land they love and live in peace. With that said you may want to checkout champaignaviationmuseum.org that has a B-25 flyin scheduled starting on April 14th with 20 privately owned bombers that will practice formation flying and commemorate the opening of a new museum in Urbana, Ohio culminating with a 7am takeoff every 90 seconds to gather with a flyover of the USAF museum to honor the 68th reunion of the Doolittle raid over Japan. If the formation of bomber recip engines doesn"t bring the hair up on the back of your neck you don"t belong on here.JK LOL

Nothing like the sound of those multi engine radials I sure miss that sound . Are they opening a museum at the old Chanute AFB at Rantul or at Urbana.I spent the winter at Chanute AFB of 58 & 59. Have some pictures taken on base. Sure wish I could be there but have other plans.

No this would be Urbana Ohio but my brother took his AF engine mechanics at Chanute AFB. I love the sound of a Harley-Davidson and have owned a few but nothing matches the sound of a flight of radials you just got to be there!

Hi mjbrown: aaahh... Your right on. And ya might be tempted to say those with prop in back are maybe similar to a "dozer" in that both "push" their way around. So, we're talking tractor talk. My favorite sound was, and still is, the V-12 engines. Allis here and Rolls Royce in England. The best ride I've ever had was in a P-51 and I was taken on 5 simulated combat strafing runs at machine gun placements on a high overhead rail road bridge. The V-12 was very smooth and the P-51 was quick and both roll and pitch. I've had 5 Corvettes and 3 had 435HP and none would keep up on takeoff from 60mph to 130+mph. Of course we didn't have a combat load. Pointed straight down at 250 was unreal how fast the earth came up at us. I found out I greyed out at 4 and half G's. Sound stops before sight when pulling G's. For me anyway.. I doubt I'll ever get another ride like that. After pullout at just below tree top level, We were at 300mph and that was very interesting. I could not focus on anything closer then maybe 300 feet ahead. The closer stuff was going by so fast the human eye is not quick enough when that low and fast. One looks farther ahead anyway for doing the flying. Made my 100mph spray speed look mild. Best ride of my life. .ag

Thanks for the heads up, JK.

The sound of the vintage reciprocating military engines is mesmerising and becoming more rare.

I was at the Dayton Air Show in 95 for the special events comemorating the 50th aniversary of the end of WWII. At one time there were about 25 WWII vintage military planes in the air at one time as well as simulated bombing and straffing runs complete with ground based concussion bombs.

I was also able to walk to within about 20 feet of an idling P51 before it taxied away for takeoff.

Fascinating.

There's no sound on earth more fantastic than a RR Merlin engine.

As far as your experience in the P-51, I read an article once about a fellow who set a new low level world speed record in an F104 he restored himself. They figured out that at 900 mph at 50 feet altitude there was about a 300 yard time lag between his eyes and his brain. In other words, what he was seeing in front of him was already several hundred yards behind him.

One of his crewmen told him not to worry about it, if he flew it into the deck he'd never know it. The fellow said that was a comforting thought.

Funny...I was at Chanute at the hospital as a patient from June of '58 until April of '59, then was transferred to Wright-Pat. Even though a patient I lived with my wife in an apartment on Sangamon St. right across from the movie theatre in Dear old Rantoul and drove to the base to work in the Orthopedic Brace Shop at the hospital every day while I "convalessed". Spent more than a few hours at the "Chandelle"...the nice NCO club. Good memories of Chanute, went to the first Half Century of Progress show there a few years ago....poor old base is falling apart except for the Octave Chanute Museum by the flight line.

Love the sound of those old radial engines. While in the Navy Our patrol squadron had 12 of the Martin P5M aircraft. Each plane had two 18 cylinder engines. We had planes starting all the time, I didn't think much about it at the time. I would drive a great distance now just to hear one start again. O the good old days. stan

may not have to drive if this works, the audio is not very good, if youve ever been near one of these things firing up though

trying again

That would be SOOO Cool to hear! I have always tried to imagine what it must have sounded like to hear and see HUNDREDS of multi-engine aircraft flying over.
I hear planes take off almost every day as we live near the Boeing plant that builds 737's. Ocasionally a B-17 or other piston powered military plane will fly in or out of Renton. What a sound! The plant here originally built B-29's. I often think "if my old house could talk" what it could tell of what it has seen and heard.

Hi guys i live about 30 miles from the Battle of Britian Memorial Flight here in Lincolnshire and we orton see the Lancaster bomber come over. We also see the Spitfire and Hurricane fighters all with Rolls Royce Merlin engines. They also have a Dakota flying so we get the sound of radial engines as well.

I use to fly with a doctor that had a TBM Avenger.Spent many days walking the prop through. Then cleaning the oil off the side after running it up. Tail marking was 401 SL. Still see it in magazines sometimes.

If you"ve got 400 bucks you can do a 30 minute ride with them sure have been digging through the piggy banks here. I"m tellin ya if I won the lottery I would ride every aircraft including the space shuttle as long as the tile holds talk about thrust 90mph passing the lanyard. Top of my bucket list is the P-51 and the F-16. I've already done a backseat of the F-106 and 102. Haven't done the F-104 which was the engine with razor wings O to FL390 in 40 seconds! Payload is small but quick!Oh sorry Navy guys the FA-18 is on there too. LOL
