Great pictures! Thanks! A friend and I have a JD 40 round back open station and a JD 40 square back with a cab that we will harvest with this year at a show or two. Really love those old combines.

grandpajohn I was tripping out remebering when all those girls were new unfortunately I was in the service during that time period and my brother would send me pictures of our Farm-O-Rama in Wilmington Ohio but not in color. A person doesn"t realize how much that stuff means when you"re 16000miles from home. Thanks!!

20 and 22 inch rows got their start then and now in Sugarbeet country. Mostly up in Minnesota and the dakota's
Sugar beets are grown on that row width so the planters and the rest of the equipment was set up already for it, just needed a corn head.
Didn't make it the first time coz 38 inch had a strong foothold in the majority of the cornbelt. would have meant buying diff planter, cultivator etc just for corn than for beans. That and the lack of good post herbicide programs plus bucking the norm made it a uphill battle the first time around.

Also 20" rows became popular in the early stages of no-till using upright leaf corn and the slow development of chemicals to retard weed growth it allowed corn to shade out the weeds fast using less chemicals. Also you could do 4-40" rows or 8-20s also it allowed you to plant 20" beans with the same planter according to Allis-Chalmers.
