Ford Mower Seal Leaking

Hi all,

I am doing some work on my old Ford 6' Rotary Cutter and noticed the lower gearbox seal is leaking. I have some concerns as to how well it wil come apart considering its age and if seals are common for it. I have also heard of people filling leaking gearcases with grease. Does this work? What would you all recommend? Thanks in advance for your help.

I used grease for a couple of years until I got the nerve to put in a seal. The blade came off easier than expected and then I think I might have used a screwdriver to gouge out the seal. Took an inside and outside measurment and went to the parts house. Not a big deal at all. TDF

Thanks Two Dogs. I will look at pulling the blade carier tomorrow after work. If it doesn't want to let loose, I may go the grease route. I would like to "fix it right" if at all possibe. Any special kind of grease if I choose to go that way?

i got a old Ford Sabre mower that my grandfather bought new back in the '50's...seal got tore up on some barb wire in early 60's...it got pumped full of i believe Pennsoil all purpose grease at first and whatever was handy later till about 10 years ago when i got tired of rebuilding the deck and got a new mower...i topped it off every spring and ran it all summer.

John Deere corn head grease works good in gear cases that leak gear oil. I have several grain augers around here that the gear box would be empty when we went to use them. I took a short length of 1/4 inch brake line and put a grease zerk on it. This way you can fill the gear box from the bottom and not just have a bunch of air in it. Regular gun grease you have to be careful and don't use any of the old clay based as it will get hard between uses and not lubricate the gears and bearings.
