JD 425 gas boiling in carb

My 425 (1985)with Kawasaki 20hp - runs fine and not overheating but when I shut it off the gas is boiling out of the carberator. What could be my problem.

So what can we do to help the situation? How long can the gas be used? We don't think it was "old" as the tractor is used pretty frequently.

I don't know, maybe use some type of heat shield, or something. Last summer after I got done brush hugging, the gas tank on my Cockshutt was boiling. Sure don't want to be smoking, or around any flames when it's like that.

Considered a heat shield between the carb and the exhaust which is 4-5" away and blows toward it. We will give that a shot, can't hurt. Thanks for the feedback.

We have been using the tractor fairly steady since fall, really noticed the "boiling" when we were pushing snow this week. We are in Denver. It is more like using summer gas for winter. Perhaps we should drain the unit and make sure we have really fresh fuel.

The tank is almost empty, we would fill it from a 5 gal tank we filled about a month ago but will get new gas. Should we get the highest grade octane or lower??

I can't recall if the 425 used an air or water cooled engine.
A small aircooled engine. In particualr if worked hard in warm weather. They need all the knock protection they can get. In particular if the carb is a little gummed or dirty and the engine is running lean.
I would say yes, run 91 octane or better. For the few gallons it uses every year. The difference in cost will be less than a couple of McDonalds Drive through meals.

Unit is liquid cooled. Carb is clean as the unit was gone thru shortly after getting it this fall. We will go high octane and see if that helps. Thanks
