Looking at a 1970ish old warn winch. It's the one that has the cables for controling it.Not the electric remote controls.Looks to be a good price for the rating 8000#.Parts are still available for it.The gentleman thats selling it says it works good.Any you guys run this old beast? To buy one rated the same is over $1200.This one's way less than that.Feedback would be great I need to make the call to jump on it or not.Going to use it to pull tractors on trailer. Thanks guys BlaineF

i built many a slide in wrecker unit back in them days with Warn and Ramsey 8000# electric winches...winches were in the neighborhood of 1200 bux back then...few years ago i decided to build a winch truck to use around ranch and bought a 8000# harbor Freight electric on sale for 299.00
its every bit as powerfull as those high priced winches and it hasnt given me a minutes problem.
it also has the remote electrics...just a thot if the used winch is around same money.

Thats a big help !I been looking at the harbor freight winches .I was wondering if they are any good. The stuff there is kinda a crap shoot.Maybe I should go that route. The used one is around $350.Only going to use it half dozen times a year probably. Thanks

The big problem with Harbor Freight is that some of the stuff is really good, and the next one just like it is pure garbage, and you'll never know which one you got until after you bought it.

While I've also had good experience with the HF winches (and many other HF products as well), for the difference in price, I'd say the Warn is a better winch. As was mentioned, HF stuff tends to be like the little girl with the little curl--when it's good it's very good and when it's bad, it's horrid! Chances are parts will still be available for the Warn in another 35 years, while the HF is much more of a crap shoot.

As well have I with the small 2000 pounder HF winch.I guess it's just a gamble on HF stuff. It's kinda like a box of chocolates never know what you are going to get.But boy that little winch pulls good for it's size. Thanks for the responses BlaineF

Back in 1979, I was a parts manager at an AMC/Jeep dealer and sold a customer a Warn winch for his CJ-7. Two weeks after he got it, he came back in...one of the drive gears had most of the teeth stripped off. Looked to have been faulty casting or something, but the company wouldn't stand behind it in any way, shape, or form. I all but pleaded on the purchaser's behalf, but the company said there was NO WAY that what I saw on that gear had actually happened.

So as a measure of goodwill, I bought the customer a replacement gear, and I learned my lesson about Warn's warranty. The next customer who asked me about one of their winches, I advised him to go elsewhere and buy someone else's product, because Warn didn't stand behind the previous one. BTW...the replacement gear held up for the customer.

Just my experience...yours may be different. But IMHO, Harbor Freight's warranty couldn't be much worse.

The warn's are a far bit better than the harbour freight. The
upright spur gear winches are great units although heavy.
Stripped teeth usually means someone trying to jerk them on
the cable like a yank strap or they over drove the winch then lost
traction and slid back.

The warn will survive a few stalls before she lets the smoke out.
That harbour freight may not even get to its rating before letting
the smoke out. Low duty cycle. The warn can be fitted with the
latest high hp motor too to make it the fastest linespeed 8000 lb
out there for off-roading.

I have a Harbor Freight winch on my Gooseneck Trailer & have loaded a bunch of tractors & equipment with it & not a problem so far & it's been on there for 2 years now. Just my thoughts, Keith

Back in the mid '80s, I worked for a company that built a car hauler. This type of car hauler was basically a one-ton dually that hauled the car on the back bed. We initially put Warn winches on the things, but had a lot of customer complaints about them. The factory actually sent out two guys to did a silent recall on the winches and rebuilt them with stronger parts. I remember asking them if this was a permanent fix or will we still be having problems with them. They assured me that it was a permanent fix. The company still had many problems with the Warn winches and finally switched to Ramsey. Maybe they didn't use strong enough Warn winches to begin with, but the winch problems went away after they switched away from the Warn winch.
To this day, I won't use a Warn winch.
