Cutting off part of muffler

I have a Farmall "A" that I will be taking to shows. Since I have been showing antique cars, I have an enclosed trailer that I plan to use to take the tractors (this one and the Allis Chalmers B I also own) to shows. The problem is that while the inside of the trailer is high enough for the exhaust, the door height is lower and will require me to cut the muffler to fit. According to my measurements, I will have to shorten the muffler by 5 - 5 1/2 inches.

My question is....other than being a little louder possibly and not getting the exhaust fumes as high, are there any other issues with doing this? I can't imagine back pressure changing or anything.

Thanks

Well on the Allis B the correct muffler most likely was under the hood so all that should stick up is the pipe and that could be cut off with no problem or like the other guy said just pull it and that way you have the best of both worlds.

We've cut plenty of mufflers off just to fit in the shed. Never an issue.

If you like it tall, cut it off and have a exhaust shop expand the bottom 1.25 inches of the cut piece (or get an appropriate longer chunk of aluminized pipe with expanded lower 1.25") and put a single sheetmetal screw in the joint to keep it from coming out when running, but easy to remove for trailering. Cut it off, won't hurt.. I had to cut about 6" off of my d-17 allis so it'd fit under my shop door.. (WHO would ever put higher than a 7' door in a barn? We don't farm er anything said dad.. 10 years later he wishes we'd have built it higher).. I didn't notice it was any louder, but ya the fumes now kinda blow in my face.. I made a extension as said for in field, but just using the loader around the farm it don't bother me much.

As for removing it.. It's your tractor.. if it's like my 33 Massey, the clamp is below the hood and it'd make it a pain to remove the muffler to load/unload, so I understand your plan.. No matter what ya do, somewhere someone will want to criticize what you do, so do what makes you happy.

Thats my opinion.

You need to get a special doctor to do this for you, a mohel, their specialty is cutting off the tips of protruding objects, very reasonable, and efficiently.

just keep a good pair of welders gloves for when it"s hot,.i keep my super m in a barn with 7 foot door,.. and yea ya don"t have fingers on top of the steering wheel when going through the door

How complicated can this be? Just remove the muffler, load the tractor, and when you get to the show, unload the tractor and put the muffler back on. Like Gordo said, the entire process will take up 3 minutes or less of your time.
