Ford Recall

Went in to work the other morning to plow snow and found this disaster in the shop, the truck had caught fire over night and burnt up, luckily the shed is new and is air tight so the fire couldnt get oxygen but it melted basically everything in the shop it's the craziest thing ive ever seen, it warped all the plastic in our grader and covered everything in soot, it will take forever to clean it all but lets just say we got lucky it didnt burn down the whole shed, just thought i would share this with you guys. and yes thats where the torch was sitting the whole time

Did the truck have a remote starter? I know of a Mustang that burnt up because of a bad wiring job for a remote starter. Torch hoses are basically fire proof. I've seen them black where someone has run the torch across them but they still worked. They would burn eventually but not easily, like other rubber. Dave

Fire investigator said ford had a recall on a cruise control deactivation switch which is right next too the master cylinder and it shorts out and starts burning it was so hot it completely melted the tires just wires were left and you guys are right it could have been a lot worse we def lucked out

It's amazing that your shop was airtight enough to put it out- Sure would have had a different result in my shop!

You may recall I had the same thing happen a couple months ago- burned the entire cab. It was outside, about 6 feet from the end of the house- luckily the wind was blowing away from the house, so no damage. Happened at midnight, luckily the only neighbor still awake had seen the fire out of the corner of his eye as he was on his way to bed.

Ours was a '95 diesel, and they sent a recall notice on the cruise control disengagement switch the same day it burned. Ours could also have been a short in the block heater, as it was plugged in at the time. It was so thoroughly burned the investigator couldn't figure out where fire started.

We put $2,500 with the $7,000 insurance settlement, and bought a '99 F350 quad-cab 4x4 diesel last weekend.

Glad it wasn't any worse. There was a fairly recent recall on Ford vehicles regarding a speed control disconnect wiring harness, if I remember correctly. My 2001 F-250 was included, as well as previous and succeeding years. Quite a few vehicles caught fire while sitting in the garage, or parked. You might check online or with a dealer to see if your vehicle was included. C.L.

You were also lucky that the gas and oxygen bottles didn't blow. That would have made a bad situation much worse.

Wow!! If I understand right, that cruise control switch is an actual brake fluid pressure switch like was so common for a brake light switch on the older rigs.

As I understand it, that switch on the Fords is not very expensive or hard to change. If Ford will not replace it, I think I would on my own nickle, just to protect my pickup and other property.

I had an experience like that last spring. I walked through the machinery shed and noticed the brake lights on in my little 85 Model Steiger Cougar 4X4. The tractor had not been driven for over a month, so the lights being on were a puzzle. I got up in the cab and pumped the brakes a few times, the brake lights stayed on. I got to tracing wires and ended up at the master cylinder brake fluid pressure switch that turns on the brake lights.
The switch body was so hot that the rubber and plastic plug connector was starting to melt and the switch was burn your fingers hot. The switch was original, 24 years old and never a problem before.
Had I not wandered through that shed, I might have lost 80% of my farm equipment including two Steiger 4X4 tractors, JD 4450 and 4020, two 1480 combines, Oliver 1950 T and 2150, two JD 750 drills and misc other equipment plus the attached shop and all tools.
I consider myself very lucky to havr caught that overheating switch before it about wiped me out.

(quoted from post at 16:36:12 02/08/10) You may want to double-check that recall; I believe it was for newer models than that one.
nd I don't remember the little PU being in recall either.

My old Uncle Donnie, told me that any time you had an attached garage you were sleeping with a bomb. If you think about gasoline and electricity he was right.

I had a recall on my 97, I didn't do anything right a way but had it done, glad it is done now. That is what the recall said that the truck didn't have to be running to have this happen. I called Ford dealer and they wanted me to bring it yesterday, right now. Only took about 15 min. Good luck Dave

I got a recall on my 97 F150 a couple years ago but had my cruise go bad before I went for the replacement so they did both had it done at my local dealer instead of where I bought it and they had brake fluid everywhere, they're no longer in business thank god but still uneasy about the replacemnet.

What, if you know, caused the fire? I assume if you had a suspect mater-cylinder switch you'd have it unhooked.

I knew about the recall a few years ago, but got refused twice when I took my 1994 F250 diesel to dealers. That included when I took it in last August in Alpena, Michigan. So, I just unhooked the trouble switch. It doesn't serve any purpose other than the cruise-control anyway.

Now?? Ford sent me a letter asking be to bring in my 1994 for TWO recalls. Brake switch and something about the front bumper falling off.

My 1994 F-250 did the same thing. Luckily it was parked in front of the house. When this happened about 10 years ago I asked the insurance adjuster if it was a known product failure. He said no, it couldn't be, paid me the money and took the truck.

Now thats sorta funny JD, "Something about the front bumper falling off" Im not making light of your situation, but the way you said it, thats funny, Sorry, J

Same thing happened to a neighbor's truck. I just bought a 95 that has been sitting up a while. Maybe I need to move it away from the house.

Mine's 2000 e150 van. Recalled and all dealer did was addd fuse to circuit. Did NOT replace switch. Little cheaper and less mess. Dave

I found it pretty amusing considering it's a 1994 truck. If it had spent it's life here in NY, the entire body would of fallen off by now, and the frame would be broken in half. But, just happens to be a rust-free Colorado truck and I don't drive it here in the winter. I called Ford and asked why they're worring about my bumper now - and they told me their recalls last forever - i.e. once started, they are never voided. So, for all I know that bumper recall came out many years ago.

Yep, the cruse control recall. Letter missed you. Did burn down a few houses. Inline fuse was the fix. Never took mine in for the fix was waiting for it to burn. Taxi cab fixed the possible problen by running a red light and totaling my truck was the color of your pic.
