Seeding yard

If you fellars where going to seed a yard, what would you use for seed types. I live in southwest Ia, where we get moderate rain, and a decent growing season. And we should have plenty of moisture with the 50 + inches of snow we have received. Just need some Ideas. Thanks in advance.

In Omaha, I have had good luck with bluegrass. Would recommend getting it mixed with rye, so there is something for ground cover while the bluegrass starts-it can be painfully slow when you have bare ground! Greg

If you would go to your local seed dealer he will have the best seed for your area. I get mine from the Pioneer man.

Go see your county extension agent or a firm that does that sort of thing and ask for their advice. They know your soil type and can help you. Why you feel that anyone hundreds or thousands of miles away can help you with this boggles the mind.

I usually ask how will it be taken care of. We sow a different seed for a well manicured, irrigated lawn (bluegrass/ryegrass). For one that will take a lot less care and water and still look good we use a fine bladed tall fescue. This is in IN. Not sure if those varieties work up there.

This is sad but one of the most common ones I see is fescue it grows just about any where in almost any soil and is next to impossible to kill once you have it started. Also if left to go to seed will spread all over the place. In Missouri it has become a small problem because it does not make a real good feed but is also the most common pasture grass there is in my area

For what it's worth, both my sister in Coeur d'Alene, ID. and my brother in Plymouth, MA. have Ky Bluegrass. It makes a nice lawn. If it's recommended for your area, go for it. C.L.
