O.T. Some suggestions for Toyotas future slogans

1. Why let anything stop you from driving a new Toyota?
2. You won't be late for that important date when you drive the exciting new Toyota!
3. We're so far ahead of the rest that they can't even see our dust! Toyota! For the thrill seeker in you.
4. Time seems to stand still when you drive a new Toyota.
5. Just think. New York to LA in 5 hours. In your new Toyota!

Greed will always be alive and well. I recall when they first began to import, they were tiny, under powered tin cans that were not reliable. But slowly they created excellent vehicles at competitive prices. Many, many folks from many nations have gotten wealthy off of just this brand alone.
But given enough time, they all get sloppy, they trade the cost of quality for profits. Then you have an episode like this.
Instead of maning up and admitting that they did it out of pure greed, they try to mitigate the issues and sweep it under the rug as soon as possible.
How can they possibly replace the lives that have been lost due to this inferior part?

Sombody should print this page off so when Toyota takes someones slogan off this page and uses it, they can claim it.

" Like the energizer bunny, it just keeps going"
"Takes a gunning and keeps on running"

Now with new manual cruise control

New page in owners manual: What to do when the gas pedal sticks. Kiss every one in the car goodby. Or if alone kiss your own a-- goodby. Don't turn off the key, as it will lock the stearing wheel, then you will have more problems. Attempt to call your lawyer, to make sure your will is in order. Stan

I recall about 1960, I was stationed at Atsugi, Japan. Honda hadn't started building cars yet, and imports were rare in the U.S. but most of the locat taxis in Japan were Toyotas and Datsuns.

There was a gravel road of about 4 miles from the base to the town of Yamato. The road was nonstop chuck holes about 6" deep. The cab drivers would put the pedal to the metal down that road, with the suspension bottoming every few seconds. We didn't call them "Kamikaze Cabs" for nothing. I said at the time any car that would survive that, had to be tough.

They will come with an enhanced liability waiver touted as the must have option. At the bottom it will say that operation of this vehicle will result in serious injury or death. Dave

I"m not sure this one can be laid just to greed...
My personal opinion/guesstimate is that something in the electronics occasionally interacts in a completely unexpected way that"s not covered in the manuals or by the theory, something that"s very difficult, if not impossible to duplicate at will...
Here in the US, fears of economic loss (lawsuits, etc) and personal prestige lead to cover-ups.
Frankly, I"m surprised the head of the company hasn"t already resigned and retired from corporate or public life for bringing shame upon his family, the Company and Japan as a Country. In earlier times, in Japan, there was only one honorable way to atone.
Greed was a factor, of course, but the enormity of accepting blame in such a situation probably delayed public acknowledgement, which is not to say they didn"t have people trying to find the problem.

How bout "take the money and run or the mainstream media will drag you through the mud."

I have money that says before the end of the year Ford will be getting run down every night on the news for something.

How about: The part that failed was made by an American company- probably by UAW union workers. Toyota fixed American workers/company bad subassembly, next time we'll insist upon Japanese inspectors. (<--Teasing Alert!) RN.

The part is produced in Eastern europe. Oh, yes the Chev truck gas tank and so on.

Actually, the repair part, a stainless steel shim is being produced in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Suspect however when this contract is over, they'll be closing the doors!

What I'd like to know is exactly what the problem is (was) and if the repair will actually finally solve the problem. If it is just a sticky pedal can you catch the edge of the shoe on the pedal and pull it back up? If electrical, will shutting off engine - first notch only - shut down runaway?

GR Spring and Stamping - the company involved. Toyota says that they will change design on new vehicles so as not to need shim, so this is a one time deal for GR Spring.

Can't stop the engines up front and can't keep the tailgates on the rear. Tundra tailgates are tearing apart at the seams and toyota won't warranty them. Junk from front to rear.

Shutting off ignition "in the heat of battle" will probably lock up the steering wheel. Better to shift to neutral, pull over, get out, and shoot battery with .357 Magnum.

That sounds like my parents driveway. Before I got married my wife tried to take her '07 Toyota Solara down it, but she bottomed out multiple times, bent pieces till the car was all out of aligment. The tires only lasted 25,000 miles because it is so far out of aligmnent. My '08 Pontiac, brother's '08 malibu, dad's '06 malibu, my dad's old '95 pontiac grand am took it just fine before the tree fell on it, and sister's '05 malibu seem to take it just fine. My wife's dad yelled at her every time he worked on it because of how bad it was falling apart. As far as the depth of the holes, I had water up to the bottom of the doors on my Pontiac one time. Whenever it was dry and in the summer I hit 40 mph in my car, but I could only control my wifes Toyota at 25, plus that is all I could hit due to the terrible brakes and delay in the gas pedal.

I would bet money that the problem is electronic and not mechanical. Between what Toyota is stating, the mechanical pedal design, and customer statements it is highly unlikely that it is a mechanical failure. This morning on the news they showed a brand new '10 Camry that ran away into something (I can't remember) and a '09 or '10 Rav-4 that ran into a convenience store wall as the lady was hitting the brakes and 30 seconds later the President of Toyota said he was confident that this part fixed the problem. He said it was only on "higher mileage vehicles." My wife and I died laughing. Later today my wife was talking to her boss and she used to have a Lexus that had this problem. She said it seemed to have to do with cruise control. I am just waiting for the next reported case after all the vehicles have been "fixed."

There is a rumor that Chevrolet and Toyota are going to merge. They are going to call their car Toilet. Problem solved.

I don't know if anyone has posted it yet or not, but Toyota already has it right.
