Ric you must not be in NY cause the DEC would own your house after doin that. Here if theres cat tails its now a wetland and shouldn't be harmed. toby.

Very nice, how did it turn out? I've got a couple here I need to do. I've always cut the dam with a backhoe and then cleaned it out with a dozer. I keep hearing that the trackhoe is the way to go.

I live in NY and wasn't aware of the cattail law. On the other hand, I've been known not to pay a lot of attention to nor get too worried about some of NY's stupid laws.

I had our pond cleaned a couple of years ago and there were cat tails in it. Left it drained all winter and was amazed at the number of bull heads that survived in the mud over the winter. Pone looks good now and no cattails.

How about the latest, the no open burning law? Can't burn brush, can't burn papers in a barrel anymore. You can burn if you call it a "ceremonial bonfire." Ha! So keep a package of hot dogs and some soda around whenever you burn.

But--as I said, I and those of us in our neck of the woods pay little or no attention to this nonsense. I suppose that the "greenies" up at the local university will send out their impressionable young folks some day to check on everyone but until then, can you read between thh lines in my sign language, Mr. Grannis? (He's the anti-everything DEC commissioner.)

Because where there are cat-tails the land is considered a preserved wetland. The cat-tails are considered a natural filter and can't be disturbed. I know here in IN that is the case and I beleive across the nation. Here if the DNR or IDEM (indiana dept. of environmental management) found out you would be dealing with all sorts of trouble. Of course that is IF they found out. I don't agree that they should have such a cow over a few cat-tails nor that they should have the amount of power to tell us what we can and can't do with OUR land but I see where there have to be some rules to keep us from destroying the land for future generations.

I think on your land you should have the right to do see you see fit. Not a bunch of do-gooders telling you what to do with land that you own.

little herbicide a few weeks before the backhoe ought to take care of the "no dig cat-tails" problem.

arent cat tails the long brownish things that grow straight up. In the pics all I see is that grass that grows around the pond. We have some of that growing in low parts of our yard that fills up with water when the pond over flows. It gets shreaded when the grass gets cut. They cows will occasionally eat it, when they feel like walking through the muck to get to it. The neighborhoods had the bright idea of building up and stopping all of the water from going down hill. So now everyones water ends up at our place, and the county wont dig out the ditches because they had the bright idea of installing the phone wires in the ditch.
