It is 7"tall about 2" at the base, as you can see
it has a plunger on the top and a hole in the
projecttile: I bought it for .75 at a flee market
just because it was different.

Is that 2" in diameter? Thats too small for a 40mm round and almost too big for a 20mm. Maybe an exploding tracer round from a 30mm vulcan gatling gun. When the plunger hits, it explodes on contact. Has a tinge of red on it so it is a tracer round as well.

hole in projectile means it has been deactivated. Look at the base and post what is printed there. size indicates it is maybe a 40mm

Dunno, but hope it's"dead".Not mortar, prolly small high explosive cannon round.Plunger would be detonation fuse, hole may be for safety/ arming"plug".Can you measure it's diameter in metric(mm's)?

OK,little Googlin' points toward WWII era 37mm cannon round,if tracer as suggested, prolly aircraft nose cannon...BUT,"nailhead" fuse pin not shown anywhere..may be"added" as part of deactivation...actual fuse had conical aerodynamic tip........maybe :)
Or might be a 40

I just measured it and it is just a hair under
4MM and their is no printing on the bottom,
{like 40MM OR 30MM } By the way the plunger will
screw out but will not come off:

PS: It sould be worth at least $2.000

37mm cannon tracer round. most likely from an anit-aircraft gun hence the red tracer tip. the "plunger" is not original and was added when it was made safe.

Hi JR,

I believe the base is for a show stand and not part of the original cartridge.

Measurer the brass at the case head and that may lead us too the cartridge size.

Also measure the bullet at the bands.

one inch equals 25.4 mm
40 mm equals 1.575 inches.

Forty mm Bofers dual and quad antiaircraft guns were used by U.S. Naval ships during WWII in the Pacific. Bofers was originally a Swedish design.

HI BUD:
Accros the base is 4MM and from the base up is 9MM
and the coller at the top of the casing is 3MM
and yes the base is just a base for the round to set on, I for got to tell you guys the the primer hole is threaded.

I tried to find it, but couldn't. Back in the '70's John Candy was in a skit on SCTV, where he played a detective with a really, really big gun. All I remember is, he kicked the door in, then tried to come through it with what looked like a .45, but was so big that the barrel was as big a round as a trash can, and he could barely get through the door. The pistol grip was like from his chin to his waist and he had to bear hug it. All and all, that whole gun, pistol had to be like 4 or 5 feet long. It was funny as I recall. Too bad I couldn't find it, it was a hoot.

From all the above I would think it is a round for the 37 MM nose cannon on a P-39 Aircobra.
The regular 37 mm round had a longer case on it.
Kind of rare you won"t see many around.
I agree with the idea of a cigar cutter.
