Is there anyone that is making a kit or reccomending a particular alternator to install on a Farmall M? I switched to 12V and do not want to change the generator.

most common alt is a 10si
which is ava. at most autopart stores
or you can have the gen rebuilt to supply 12 volt costly the last time i checked

Thanks. I found the kit that they are selling on this page. It uses the large delco. Really want to hide it up by the thermostat houding.

Articles on this site, covers entire change over. I did one on a Farmall 200. Replaced coil with generic 12 volt coil, instead of adding resistor to coil circuit. Works fine

There are two ways to do it. On an M you can hide that alternator under the hood but you have to use an idler to provide belt tension. The other way is to use an alternator from a Nissan pickup truck from the 80's. Use a long bolt through the stock mounting bracket and spacers to get the pulleys lined up.

I put a Delco 10si on an M and didn't need an idler, used the gen belt and if I remember I flipped the bracket over and shortened it, fit under the hood and worked fine.

The diesel tractors back in that time period used 12 volt generators. (Oliver comes to mind) The dimensions and the entire wiring hookup for the regulator and all was the same for 6 and 12 volt generators of that era. They'll bolt right up,hook up the wiring like original and you're done with that part of the conversion. You can get those most anyplace that tractor parts are sold.

I did the same basic thing on an H and it works great.

I did an M last summer with a 10SI Delco. Problem with the large diameter alternators like a SI series Delco is that there is little room to swing the alternator from side to side to adjust the belt. Not much room between the valve cover and hood for adjustment.
We built the alternator bracket with verticle slots 1.5 inches long where the bracket bolts to the engine. This allows the alternator to move straight up/down to adjust the belt with hardly any side to side swing. It appears to work well and is an easy thing to build.
