speaking of new innovations...

Years ago I used to get REAL cold in 30 degree weather while duck and deer hunting. Dumb, poor kid, wearing two pair of cotton socks with uninsulated leather boots, two pairs of blue jeans, cotton T shirt, couple cotton sweatshirts, a jacket, cotton gloves. Work up a sweat getting set up and sit and FREEZE. A lot smarter now, but these new synthetic socks, boot insulation, undergarments, and coats make hunting a lot more enjoyable. Tolerate colder weather for a lot longer now.

Yes I can tell you about what we call Outer Gear. I live in a mining town in Yukon Canada. I have some gear that you can stay warm in no matter what temp it is. It is warm, dry, tough, & comfortable. You can work in it & not look like the Michlen Man & it is attractive. I have work boots that a good to -100. I have long johns that you could stand outside in -40 & not be cold. Staying dry is the key. Gerald

To bad cloths like those are not sold in the area I live in. Seems like if you want good warm stuff you have to go up north to buy it. I know the stuff they have in may area isn't all that good and in the deer stand after a couple hours your froze up and have to get out of the stand and come in to a warm house

Can I assume that all of the cold weather gear is the result of people sitting for hours outside to watch football?

My momma taught me to come in out of the cold unless working. I ski hard enough that is can be work too so that doesn't count as playing either.

Old, it seems like you'll have to go farther north than my neck of the woods to find the good warm stuff. I can find all kinds of style, but nothing that'll cover my butt and my head without ordering from some expensive catalog.

When I was in Saskatchewan a couple of years ago my goal was to find a good warm coat that I could wear for good occasions. At a surplus store in a mall in Prince Albert I found just what I was looking for. It's long, has a gigantic, well insulated hood, longer sleeves, and it's just plain warm. And it only cost me something like $40.00 Canadian. I could never find something like that here in NW Iowa. I did have to get used to that left-hand zipper the Canadians use. Jim

Your typical sports fan, especially those that watch football, do not have enough brains to know when it is cold, much less to come in out of the cold.

You might say that ALL football players, coaches, and fans, don't have enough intelligence to pour p!ss out of a boot.

A few years ago when I worked for a Outdoor power equipment dealer, we had to clean out the attic, of loft in the place, well I found a pair of Arctic Cat snowmobile boots made in Canada by Kamik I think. They have the felt liners and are really warm. They were a left overs kicking around up there for a few years, so the parts manager gave them to me for 20 bucks. I have also had good luck with the Sorel winter boots, but I cant get a break on the price of them.lol ;) j

I have noticed that there is a great difference in the stock of winter clothes, when I have been in the south or, not even that far south. Like the arctic line from Carhartt or the Zero Zone from Walls, both are for a cold climate more like northern US or southern CA. What is funny to be in the Carolinas or similar latitude about February in just a hooded jacket or less and they are running around all dressed up like polar bears for winter.

We used to live 2 miles up the hill from Lake Superior in Minnesota. When I walked to the end of the drive to get the mail I could see the Lake. It does obviously get cold there. The cold here is not that great, but it is damper and more bone chilling.

I've pretty much worn out the supply of outerwear I brought down with me....plus some of it doesn't fit anymore :>). What I need is something I can go out and work in the cold and wind all day long. Plenty to keep busy with in the wintertime.
