OT: One Christmas morning . . .

My mother was gathering all the torn wrapping paper, packing tissue, and empty sacks and was burning all of it in the fireplace.

Somehow she unknowingly threw a paper sack full or Roman candle fireworks into the fireplace.

Anyone else celebrate with fireworks during Christmas?

My folks always had a live tree........Eastern Red Cedar; after a couple of weeks, they would be really dry. My mother attempted to put one in their fireplace (too big to get it all the way in) and it flashed over/essentially exploded. Had some 1st and 2nd degree burns on her arms, but no lasting damage. Because they had a large brick hearth, there was no damage to the house.

I lit off a string of firecrackers at midnight on New Year's and the next morning the stock cows weren't in the cattle yard where they were supposed to be. The pipe gate going to the field was bent in U shape and was wide open. They didn't go far but they didn't want to go back. Laid the gate down and drove over it with a tractor to half way straighten it out. Jim

In th 50' every one in our town piled there Chrismas tree's on the church lot. It was a huge pile probably thirty foot high. I was in charge of having a burning of the green celebration, When I saw the size of that pile I decided we had better have the fire department on hand. I put a match in that pile and you talk about an explosion. It was over in seconds but the pile burned all night was happy fire dept. was there. It also gave people a first hand example of the dangers of a natural Chrismas tree.

Not at Christmas, but a friend of mine had a party at his cabin in July, and went to pick up his girlfriend. He hid his fireworks in the woodstove, who would have thought they would have started it in July - You know the outcome.

I spent one New Years Eve on Taiwan. The officers and Staff NCO's of our outfit were invited to a New Years Eve party at a Nationalist Chinese Air Force Officers Club.

The Chinese celebrate New Years with fireworks, and there were so many fireworks going off right inside the club that they had to stop the dance a couple of times to sweep the debris from the fireworks off the dance floor.

At one point, I went a block or two down the street to reload on fireworks, and from a block away it sounded like a full scale firefight was going on iside the club. I have no recollection of Christmas that year, but I'll never forget New Years Eve.

A fellow I knew was burning his Christmas paper in the fireplace and set his house on fire(It had a wood shingle roof). It was about a 3000 square foot house and it burned to the ground.
