36 or 38 inch Tires

Are there any advantages to 12.4-38 inch tires over 12.4-36 inch tires? They would be on a John Deere A. I have 36's right now but have a broken wheel. I can't decide whether to find another matched spoke wheel or replace what I have with 38 inch hardware.

Anybody have any 38 inch tires for sale?

Thank You

The 38" tire, since it is taller will give better traction due to an increased contact patch.(puts more rubber on the ground) The taller the tire, the longer the contact patch, the wider the tire, the wider the patch. That's my 2 cents worth.

It takes more power to turn the larger tires and ground speeds will be increased. Advantage or disadvantage is determined by the intended use of the tractor. To keep the tractor level you have to change the front tires also.

On an "A" that old, I'd at least keep the 36inchers...
They are going to be impossible to find before long..
38" rubber is generally easier and cheaper to find.

From a "Collector's " standpoint, I would try to keep a usable set of 36" for it..
But, then...those early "A"s had no "road Gear", and the 38" would speed it up a little..
Your call...!!

We tried to get 36" tires for a JD 420U (I think)and found it nearly impossible. Found out at that time they were so rare that tire companies only made them once every 5 years regardless of demand. So 3 yrs after a run was made they got scarce to impossible to find new ones. Finally got a new set but took 2 yrs.

When converted from steel most were 11 X 38 that is now 12.4 X 38 but a few were put on 36" for 12" tires that are now 13.6 X 38 and same height. Never seen one that was converted with a 11 X 36 tire. And that is from the time they were still normal in the fields. Our 38 A had 11 X 38"

It has 12.4-36 now. Alone it looks alright, put it next to other tractors and they look real squatty.
