Beans in Western Pennsylvania

Here are a couple pictures of my brother and I combining beans a couple of weeks ago. The 4400 is old, but ran great. Never missed a beat. She"s small and slow. But she"s ours and the best part she"s paid for!

Old combines like yours are so much more dependable than the new ones. On an old combine you pull a lever to start the separator or unloading auger instead of flipping a switch and praying. You move a lever to adjust the chaffer and sieves. It's that simple! If it doesn't go when you pull the lever you grab a wrench, make an adjustment, get back in the seat and go! There are very few wires or connections to go bad, no servos, no safety switches, no ECM's, and on and on.

While the neighbor with the new machine is sitting at the edge of the field waiting for the service tech to come with his laptop to plug into the combine to make a diagnosis, you're still plugging along round after round. Good luck with the rest of harvest.Jim

I"m not knocking older machine cause I like them and think they are great, but if you have ever ran a new machine and compare them to an older machine. The difference is night and day. The newer machines are more dependable and much easier to set between corn and beans. They are way more comfortable too. Again I"m not knocking the older machines. I love running them and watching them work.

We are in Mercer county near the Ohio line. Our bean yields were ok, nothing to get excited about. Corn yields were good.

A newer bigger machine would be nice, I am sure. However, due to our size, it wouldn't be economical. However, with this type of machine, we can be independent, when the crops and weather are right, we can go.

Now our bottle neck is the trucking, with a dump trailer and gravity boxes its a little slow.
