Crazy Hay Year

Well I managed to get the hay I cut last Sunday up this past week. I baled 374 bales on Wensday and another 250 bales on Thursday. It was as good hay as I had baled all year. I couldn't beleive it. That put my total this year to about 2500 small squares. I got another wild hair and cut about another 10 acres today. It was kinda thin in spots, but other wise look like good hay, if I can get it up. Forcast is good thru Thursday with the exception of 50% to 60% chance of rain Tuesday into Tuesday night. Maybe I can dodge another bullet...Anybody else even attempting to cut hay halloween week???

I rolled hay for a crazy neighbor a few yrs. back never give up he said, real good hay did'nt waste our time! THAT WAS THANKSGIVING DAY!

Well I cut hay last week Monday here in NY, never baled hay this late. Finally my bale thrower wore a hole threw a hydrulic line for the thrower. Its of for a new hose for me.J

Quit this year in late Sept, but last year baled some on like Nov 5. This is s.w.Pa. Two years ago good fall weather and baled up til Oct 30. That was the 12,000 bale year. Last year only 8500. This year only 5808. I'm the soc sec. nut that hauls them all with a pick-up truck.

Casey,

I live 40 miles south of Nashville and I've had the same problem you've had. I have had very few 4 to 5 day dry spells this summer. I've also had some equipment break-downs that have required too much replacement part acquisition time.

I still have about 5 acres of second-cut hay that I want to put up in small squares. I plan to cut tomorrow and hope the weather man is wrong for Wednesday / Thursday.

I've still got 60 acres left to cut and I intend to save it. Im a little gunshy on the forecast this week. Figure wait until after the next front clears through and try to get at least half of it, then get the rest on the next clear event.

I had good luck last week. Cut Sunday and Monday. Hay was full heavy Thursday but I baled it anyway. Got 400 small squares before mechanical problems shut me down, rolled the rest. It turned out 50 and a piece. December 7 is the latest I've cut hay and gotten it up. My goal is to be finished by the 10th of November this year. I could cut some more but with the way sales are going I cant see pushing it, theres a 60 acre pasture field of knee high red clover and orchard grass about knee high calling my name. With the way sales are going this year and the price of heifers at the stockyards Im leaning toward getting up the 50 acres I had planned and then buying some 5-6 weight heifers to finish out and sell as heavy springers.

We were baleing ours this weekend. Out of about 5 acres cut got about 35 bales so it was pretty thin. Lots of weeds growing. Gave up on our coastal field, going to shread and disc it and hope for a better one next year. But going to continue baleing up everything that is left out on our other hay field. What the cows wont eat the goat will.
