Adding oil to gas??

A not so reliable source told me the other day that he adds a little motor oil to his gas in his truck (it's an old beater). He said that it helps prevent the valves from burning. Is there any trueth behind this? I have never heard of doin such a thing.

Don't know. Back when unleaded gas was a new issue I still had a gas engine combine and was concerned. So I tried putting up to 10% diesel fuel in it. Don't know if it did any good. Did notice two things- a little hard starting on a cool morning, and most interestingly- the crankcase oil level accumulated!

Not so uncommon. Back years ago they sold a top oil that was added to the gas to help lube the valves etc. So yep you can add some oil or MMO which is made just for that or ATF which will also do the same thing plus help clean things up

Just guessing here, but adding oil to the gas for a newer vehicle might overheat or plug the cat converter.

When I used to run that old 105 combine with a 4020 gas engine I used no lead for about a thousand hard, red manifold hours after I overhauled it and there was no appreciable compression loss. When the valves were ground the origional seats were left in so I assume the seats were not hardened. I checked the compression every summer as part of the checkup I gave it for the fall work. Jim

bob , thats because you added too much diesel and it did not burn it, just washed it past the rings to the pan. but yes adding oil is good for the valve guides.

I recently used about 50 gallons of mixed two cycle gas obtained from a boat for the pumping. The tractor exhaust was a little smoky but otherwise the tractor ran OK.

I use 2 cyl. oil evertime I put gas in my Case La .. I use 1 of them little bottles to 10 gallon of gas ...
Right or Wrong .. it's what I do and it seem to be working ..{ it may smoke a little , but who cares }

On a different vein, I have been adding 2 stroke oil to gasolene to help preserve it. The garbage they can actually pass off as gas is a joke anyway, now it has 10% ethanol to boot. So I add 1 ounce of 2 stroke oil for each gallon of gas, and it lasts a lot longer. Especially good for stuff not used every day.

've been adding 2 cycle oil and kerosene to engines I'm laying up for the winter.I syphon most of the gas out of the tank ,add the oil/kero. mix and run the engine until I can smell it in the exhaust.I've had no problems starting those engines inthe spring.
