I need to do a transmission service on my 05 F150. Found out there are two transmissions used on that model one is a4R70W, the other is a 4R100. I guess it makes a difference on the type of oil used. I got a price form $160 to $225, I figuer if I do it I can do it for a lot less. How can I deterinne what trans my truck has, and how much fluid is needed. Do the manufactures still not put torque convertor drains on these vehicles? Thanks Stan

if you cant find a data plate or its not on the dipstick, call ford parts and give them the vin number.they will tell you what trans

The 4R70W is, for all intents and purposes, an updated version of the old AOD, also called the AODE. The 4R100 is the E4OD, more or less.

Pan shape will tell you definitely which one it is.

You should have the 4R70W. The 4R100 is not used in the F150. 4R70W has a flat bottom pan. The 4R100 has a sump in the middle of the pan and may have a drain plug. Torque converter drain plugs have been gone for years now.
Taking the pan off is a waste of time. Having the "flush" done gets 90%+ of the fluid out. you're only going to get about 1/3 of the fluid dropping the pan. The filter is only a fine brass screen.
The 4R70W uses Mercon 5(Dexron6), the 100 uses Mercon SP.

Stan, the 4R100 has an obvious sump in the middle of pan.Otherwise,it's a 4R70.

If the fluid isn't too dirty, drop the pan and change/clean the screen and clean out the sediment from bottom of pan.Add corerct fluid. Not much fluid getting drained, but much better than nothing.

If the fluid is real dirty or brown and needs a flush, make sure the pan is removed and sediment cleaned out.Ever hear of a tranny that stopped working after a flush? That's the reason why.
