The neighbor wants to sell his pickup, 99 chev with the 4.3L motor a little six cylinder. how does this motor preform? It has 56000 miles on it and runs good. Thank you much...

Chevrolet has been using them for quite awhile now.I've had two of them in S-10 4x4's and both have been very good. Expect around 17-20 mpg normal driving, maybe better in a two wheel drive pick-up.

We use them in our company trucks, they are good for 180K or so. The only consistant issue we have is the fuel pumps - they only seem to last 50k-80k miles before needing to swap them out.

Fuel mileage isn't any better than the base line V8s usually in the 16-18 MPG range. The 2000 to 2003 ones seem to have a lot more power than the 2004+ models. I don't know if its reflected in their HP ratings but we definately noticed it.

I have a 95 with the high output 4.3. It has central port ignition which has been discontinued but I have 265,000 miles on original motor and transmission.
It is based on their v8s with two cylinders cut off. This truck has seen pretty hard use pulling trailers etc. Never had problems with 4X4 parts either. It has had Mobil 1 in it since it was broke in and is still running strong with 265,000 miles on it. I just put another set of tires on it so hope its good for another 50,000 miles.
The only downside was the Central Port Injection system which costs some money to replace but other wise only costs has been regular upkeep such as a starter, alternator, brakes, air conditioner pump during that time.
I just drove 200 miles to get new tires and checked mileage 22.3 - best I ever got. Usually it is 19-19.7

On occasion they will develop a phantom miss-fire and stumble. Simple enough fix however. Use a scan tool to re-zero the distributer to match the crank 0 degrees by turning the distributer.

We use them in our Hyster Forklifts at work and by the Hour meter they all have well over 300,000 miles on the and still running strong.
But they do run on propane! Engines seem to last longer that run on propane?

Never had a problem with any of ours. I once had a '92 full size 2WD, 4.3 and a stick with a really high rear end and it would get 24-25 on the interstate. Drove from northern IN to Atlanta one time with no refueling if I remember right.

I have a 93 p/u with that engine. I bought it new and it just turned 279K. I have literally never turned a wrench on the engine itself. Starter, alternator, waterpump, but never an issue with the engine itself. At 56K it is like a new one. Just keep the oil and filter changed.

I dunno. I think on balance they're generally quite good, but sometimes you get a dud too.
Neighbours had an 88 I think... and put somethign like 500 KM on it without a wrench ever on the engine. Thought is was so great that tehy bought a 98 just like it. I think it's on engine number 3 or 4 right now and that just locked the other day on them...
Dome gaskets seem to be the killer on this particular one... I don't know if that's a widespread thign or just how they use it, but I know they're quite sick of it now.
This one does see a lot of start and go driving. never gets warm, etc. That is a killer...
Might want to check the database with GM and see what's been done to it over the years if the neighbour doesn't remember or hasn't owned it all along...

Excellent for the displacement with a 5-speed stick behind it (can't vouch for auto trans). Had a '92 purchased brand new. Put on over 195,000 highway and local miles with very little repair/upkeep aside from standard PM. 2nd owner has well over 200,000 on it and is still in love with it.

Good trucks,
Bill
