Running on wood gasification ?

Anyone ever play with running an older tractor on wood gas ? I remember a university in Tennessee (U T ?)that did some work on it several years back.Think they adapted it to a Farmall H or M ? Also farmers in Europe did the same in WW2.The wood is distilled in the process,driving off the combustable gas .

Thinking of a method of transportation should some idiot country explode one of those bombs that destroys the electric grid and all electronic gadgets including any vehicle circuit board.Maybe all these old tractors were saved for a purpose without us knowing why ?

If it should happen then there goes my windshield wiper delay and YTMag.lol.

I-H had a prototype 10-20 set up like that. There was a picture on a Red Power Magazine a long time ago.

The wood isn"t "distilled", it"s burned, and the smoke and combustion byproducts are used to run the engine. Most people don"t realize that carbon monoxide is very combustible.

Not saying you dont burn the smoke but I Googled running an engine on wood and several articles came up explaining the wood is distilled and the resulting gas is burned almost like LPG.seems scrubbing all the tar like substances produced is the hard part as they really gum up the intake and combustion areas of the engine. bill m.

Call it whatever you wish.....what you are doing is more or less making charcoal and burning the gas produced in the process.

When coal is converted into coke.....the "coking" process produces..(duh!) coke gas. This gas is used to fuel blast furnaces, fire boilers, etc.

When coal is coked and wood is converted to charcoal, you heat them up in special ovens and seal off any oxygen....if you don"t....the coal or wood burn up. This starving process produces the gases as the volatile elements are driven off. If you ever build a fire in a stove.....especially with coal and close the damper (cutting off the air)....you begin a crude coking process and that green looking coke gas will ignite like gasoline if you suddenly open the stove door.....ask me how I know....hehe!

Of course internal combustion engines have been modified to burn these crude gases.....but I"d be more interested in making an engine run on home distilled alcohol than on wood gas.

I have converted 2 tractors to dual fuel, wood gas and gasoline. And I have two more to do.. well, two more for now...

One was a John Deere M and my most current a Case 310. Both run really good on wood but the Case has quite a bit more power.

Running on wood gasification ?
