Looking for a 223 with a scope, old fashioned, non rambo style. Any suggestions ?

Personally I would go to any good gun shop and just go down the line looking at different makes and models till i found one I liked. Most are pretty much the same and the more you spend the better the quality.
Or have one custom made, I had a custom made 7MM Mag. cost like all "H" to build but was a great gun.
had to sell it because of my arthritis but wish i still had it if just for bragging rights.

Remington makes a model 700, about $800 or so Ruger makes a M77 in .223, about $650 or more, Kimber makes one dont know their price but I am sure that it aint cheep. (these are bolt action)
All the companies that make AR's have the .223 caliber. Real fun to shoot too, but pricey at $1000 and up.

What is your price range?

How much are you spending ? H&R has a real nice single shot , bull barrel , comes with a big scope. Seen them on sale for 299. Can't go wrong with a Remington 700 either. That'll cost more though. Good Luck. Nothing like getting a new gun.

I have a NEF in .223 - bull barrel, single shot break action like a single shot shotgun. Nice little gun. Accurate, even with a cheap scope. If you can use a single shot, I recommend this one. (Be suprised how fast you can drop another cartridge in for follow up shot.)

If you are going economy on this, find a dealer for Stevens. The Stevens, if I'm not mistaken, is the Savage without the "Accu-trigger". Very well made firearms that are very accurite out of the box.

What Ray said on NEF single shot. BUT, handle the gun first and check the trigger pull. Some have good trigger pulls and some don't. Gunsmith says trigger can't be worked on them to improve trigge pull.

If you get a Savage I would get one with the Accutrigger.

The .223 remington rounds are now $11/box of 20 and that is about the going rate. (that is US made ammo) I dont buy imported ammo.
.30-06 rounds are now $1/round, I bought .30-06 when it was .50 per round, 9 years ago when I bought my bolt action .30-06.
The .22 LR rimfire bullets are about 6 cents per bullet, If you are looking for a basic plinking gun then .22 might be what you want. Smith and Wesson now makes a .22 rimfire AR, real neat, $600 and ammo is cheap.

I agree. I have one too. Bought it for a truck gun when the wife decided she liked keeping the Mini 14 in the house while I work nights. Bought this past spring for $229 new with a cheap jap scope on it as a combo. Shoots as good as I can hold it.

Like some one above said, check the feel of the triger. My cousin has a 22-250 just like mine and his triger sucks, mine is the smoothest one of all my guns. Most gun stores won't let you dry fire guns, but with the single shot you can get a feel for the triger with a thumb on the hammer.

Good luck.

Mine was a great varmit gun before the wife took it. Of all my guns it's the only one she likes. She keeps it by the bed while I work nights. When I come home in the mornings and have to pick up 30 empties off the front porch I know somthing went bump in the night loud enough to wake her up. After ammo went sky high I have got her now to where she just tosses a pack of lit black cats out the bed room window when the dogs start barking and wake her up.

Assuming you're looking for a bolt gun, Savage is probably the best rifle for the money right now. Ruger and Remington both make decent bolt action rifles as well. If you don't care about price, then check out the new Model 70 Winchesters, which are made by FN (maker of the "Belgian Brownings") here in the US. The new Model 70 is probably the best factory bolt gun you can buy for less than a grand. However, it doesn't appear to be chambered in .223 (.22-250 and .243 are available).

Unless you own the only Mini-14 in existence that will shoot 1/4 inch groups at 100 yards, it's not in contention for "best varmint gun".

I've got nothing against Mini-14s; in fact I own the real thing, an M-14. But I would never classify the Mini as a varmint rifle.

Dicks sporting goods has a Mossberg rifle with a 3x9 scope, wood stock, several calibers 299.00.I would buy one today if I had the money on hand. The single shot action puts a ruptured case too close to your eyes.I had this happen on a rolling block 22 rim fire years ago.

Mossberg has a rifle with a wood stock and 3x9 scope for 300 bucks.Dicks sporting Goods has a flyer in the weekend paper.

Tikka T3 - walnut/blued - $600. This thing is made under the same plant as Beretta/Sako. The bolt is glass smooth....the finish is amazing...and the gun is dead accurate out to 600yds. I have a .223 and loved it so much I went out and picked up another in .300WM. These guns are HIGHLY under rated....take at look at one and handle it.

Just for those who do not know who Tikka is...it is not some crappy NEF, HOWA, RUGER etc....

I would say buy another Remington 700 but hoenstly they are tired and the new remingtons only come in a 1:12 twist..which does not spin those AFFORDABLE 45/55 pills very nicely. Plus the Remington is too expensive for what it is...

You can buy a new 700 SPS in 223 for just about $500 NIB...

Step up to the SPS Varmint (heavy 26" barrel) for $550 or...

The SPS Tactical (heavy barrel 20") for $550 - $600...

BTW,

All milsurp stuff is 5.56 NATO. It is not shootable in a 223 chamber. The round may physically be the same size but the 5.56 NATO runs at higher pressure and the chamber throat is longer to keep it from over pressure condition... Running milsurp in a 223 chamber will result in flattened or pushed primers... or worse...

You are getting ripped off if you are paying six cents for just a .22 rimfire "bullet." Out here we pay less than that for an entire ROUND of ammo that has a BULLET, a cartridge case, propelant powder, AND priming compound.

I suppose your "guns" have detachable "clips" that you stuff your "bullets" in too.
