Weld-on sprockets??

I've got a couple of sprockets and hubs to weld together. I've never used them before.

Do you guys weld the complete circle or just three or four short runs around the circle?

Both sides?

Any trouble with warping?

My instinct tells me to just clamp it and weld it and don't overthink it, but sometimes I end up with an un-usable product that way.

Thanks,
Paul

I've always clamped them so they couldn't heat distort, tack welded several places, removed the clamps and welded all the way around.

Never had one fail or run crooked yet.

Have used a few of them Clamp, tack in several places & then weld all way around and it will do just fine.

I'll just chime in here too- Clamp them tight, tack, and weld all the way around the hub.

I used to work at a sprocket/gear shop and welded about 95% of the sprockets that went out the door. We had an air powered cylinder that would clamp down when you stepped on a peddle, and it had a motor that spun it around with an adjustable speed. The wire feed welder was clamped to an arm that swung in from the side and was adjustable for different positions. Very home made setup, but it worked great and I'd be willing to bet that lots of guys on here have seen a sprocket welded by that rig if they have anything made under the AGCO umbrella. Also lots of other manufacturers in NE Wisconsin use them as OEM as well.
