for the TX folks...

Wife liked her last TX trip so much she has another planned for end of Oct-early Nov. She'll be flying into Houston and driving a big loop between there, the King Ranch, San Antonio, and Amarillo (about 1500 miles). What kind of weather can she expect (best guess)? Also, from Houston to Kingsville (?) shows two roads, one runs right along the coast and one a little way inland. She wants to see as much as possible, which of the roads will be the best bang for the buck? Sure she'll have plenty more ?'s but that's a start.

Thanks, Dave

early Nov? she could see snow in Amarillo and sun and 90 deg in Houston. Probably not likely on the snow but I have seen it before. Never know about Texas weather.

Hope she has a good trip
Jeff

probably looking at highway 35 it goes south thru bay city and on down to the valley lot's of it right along the coast other one is 59 south thru victoria both good routes. 35 goes less than a block from my house

Tell her to bring a coat and sun tan lotion. Be sure to keep the gas tank full. Not many gas stations in some parts of her trip.

She's going off in the wrong direction. Tell her to head up on Hwy. 59 and see East Texas. Everything west of Austin and Fort Worth is a desert! Here in East Texas we got lakes, rivers, bayous, trees, gardens of every kind and much of Texas' history came from East Texas. Prettiest part of Texas if you like to see green stuff.

that time of year the cold fronts will make it down so one day will be 88 degrees, the next it will be 40 degrees and the wind blowing 20 miles per hour.. after a couple of days, it warms back up to 70s to 80s...

south of corpus there are few gas stations on the road to valley one you pass kingsville.. and not a drive recommended at night in case of a breakdown..

You forgot to mention all the inbred folks in East Texas.

Tell you what, YOU stay EAST of I-35, and NORTH of I-10, and I will stay out of your backwoods, backwards part of the state.

East Texas is not quite one step above Arkansas for harboring shoeless, uneducated, peasants.

I bet those "Shoeless, Uneducated Pheasants" in east Texas have better breding than you do and some of them can probly trace their geneolgy back ot the revolutionary war.
A "shoeless, uneducated Hillbilly" from West Virginia. That can trace my geneolgy back to the Revolutionary War & almost the Mayflower. Also my Great,Great Grand Father served in CSA.

She's got a set of places she has to see/go but she might like the country around the swamps. She has to visit the King Ranch, Ft Worth Stockyards, and the AQHA HQ/Museum. Would like to see the Palo Dura Canyon and has to visit some folks in Clifton then meet a horse transporter somewhere a couple hours NW of Houston then back to Houston and home. She'll have a friend with her and will have between a week maybe 2.

Like the other guys say, pack for year-around temperature and precipitation. The King Ranch is one of the most desolate places I have seen in the lower 48, and Amarillo is the single ugliest city in the whole US of A. Other than that, it could be a nice trip. San Antonio and Houston are fun to visit.

Dave,
I would say that 59 south to Victoria TX where it becomes 77 South is the best route south. From Hou to Kingsville will take her between 5-7 hours depending on many factors. Then from Kingsville north would be 77 North to Corpus where shed get on IH37 North to SA and then IH35 north from there. Never been to West TX but I live in College Station and travel to the "valley"(two more hours south of Kingsville) all the time. We are in a major drought in all of central and south texas and I hate to say that if we dont get a hurricane this year its gonna be an ugly trip all the way around the state. I take it shes on another horse mission?. Im on a mission for my wifes horses too, a mission to get them a nice barn, green pastures, muck stalls and an arena too! I cant wait until I can get her to change bearings on my old 6600 combine! Just my two cents! Caleb in TX

dave2, HOT and Slightly less Hot! Supposedly it is going to be about 95 here in Central Texas. You will not need your Goose Down jacket yet!
OBTW. Today, The Summer of 2009 if Officially tied as the 2 hottest summer in history, 66 days of 100 or ++ degree weather. Today 103
Later,

Her and her friend are picking up 2 horses one is mine (so she don't feel so guilty about my shoveling  ) and her friend bought a mare. Told her I'd just by her RT tickets and send her on vacation but that wasn't good enough.

petetx[/quote]robably looking at highway 35 it goes south thru bay city and on down to the valley

When did DOT change I35? Last time I went south on I35 it ended at Laredo not the valley

You have never been to Alpine or in far west Texas. It makes The King ranch look like a paradise.
