going to rebuild my 1950 8-n side mount dist.need any info.on any perf parts. my shop manual shows two pistons one at 6.1 and 6.7 comp. can a person mill the head and if so how much ? i have found duel exhaust they say is good for up to 30% more power? i know that im not the only old fart out hear that likes to get more power.i wish i still had my old flat head v-8.im sure the 4 cly can be inproved on.please help if you can.

There used to be plenty of Ford Model A/B performance parts out there, and the Ford flathed tractor engines are very similar to those.

You can mill the head - a machine shop could tell you how much.

More displacement always helps, and more RPM's would help. A flathead is limited on intake and exhaust flow, so clean up the ports and relieve the valve pockets. I don't know if there are bigger valves that would work but that would help.

You'd need more carburetor long before you'd need more exhaust system, so 30% more power from a dual exhaust is not likely to work out. Look for a dual carburetor setup or a bigger carburetor. Buy or build some headers.

Ford A and B parts wont fit the 8n engine. The 8n engine can use v8 pistons, rings and valves, thats about it.A Ford 600 or 800 tractor is the only way to get more power. The dual exhaust idea on an engine that runs under 2000 rpm is a money pot for those selling it.

You mention the v-8 flathead- wish I had the money to do a funks conversion. I DO have a couple of v-8 flatheads if you want too!!!!!!!!!!

The Flat-head V-8 would be great and they can be massively over-bored (301"?)..

Speed parts can still be found for the Flat-head..

Some "Funk conversions" had in-line sixes..I have seen small block ford engines in converted 8N tractors..
Of course, then you need to start looking for stronger Axles..!!

Not much that can be done to that old flat head engine to get more power and still have it last very long. Some leave out the sleeves so as to use bigger piston but that in turn destroys the block. Milling the head is a bad idea because if you take it a tad to far then the valves hit the head and you have another bad problem. So what I'm saying is NO WAY to get much more out with out replacing the engine with say a funk conversion
