I just bought a 986 with water in the oil?I suspect it is cavitation? Any one with sugjestions on were to start or any does or dont .

Open radiator cap, crank engine, let run a few minutes, see if there is bubbling in radiator, see if it heats up quickly and overflows. If so, probably you have a blown head gasket. Also, is there any white smoke which is water getting into a cylinder. There can be other causes which I don't know enough about to advise on.

drain the crankcase and pull the pan.pressurize the rad and get a flashlight, lay under the tractor and see where the water is leaking.the water could be coming from a hole in a sleeve, the oil cooler, from rusted out soft plugs or from a blown headgasket.
bet its not a headgasket

On my 1086 the cooler put oil in the coolant, not coolant in the oil. The oil in the cooler is at a higher pressure than the coolant in the cooling system, so the oil wins out and forces itself into the coolant. It makes for a really gunky radiator.

However, I don't see why the process wouldn't be reversed when the engine isn't running. Jim

Cavitation is a very common problem with the Melrose 300 and 400 series engines. Only other things it could be is the sleeve orings or head gasket but these two are unlikely. If it was the oil cooler you would have oil in the coolant also as oil pressure is 50 PSI plus and coolant system pressure is 12 to 14 PSI.

I'm with with MN Scott on this one

Could be something else but this is usally what it is

After you rebuild I'd add a water filter and make sure to keep the CD additive at the correct level

These were great engines except for this issue. You can probably get by with a sleve kit, bearings and gaskets.

Unfortunatly a few thousand in parts but an easy rebuild
