Oats, Straw Oats !!!

Well I've taken a bunch of photos, just no time to post, will do later, weather has been ideal this week.

6620 JD combine is doing well, they got the A/C fixed, extensions on the knife guards, fields they put nitrogen on grew too tall, darned rain keeled em over, but those extensions are picking it up in those areas. Crop looks good, I've hauled 2 loads of 15 tons, local supplier bought 2 single axle loads and I'm delivering 16 tons tomorrow morning, headed out at 6:00 a.m.

Mind you, I've never really done any of this, he's got 68 acres of oats, figured out the gravity wagon, just have to remember about emptying that auger/chute before folding 'er up, well I spilled a shovel full darn it ! Then there is another 40 to combine for the large dairy operation in town, come to find out today.

Good thing is, my friend the farmer is there, just can't run his tractors, combine, truck etc. we have good help and things are moving along, it looks like we'll get 200 4x4 round bales of straw, but he's going to bale 600 small squares of it, got 55 round in the barn, another 60 to round up tomorrow when I get back. Straw looks good, hope he can get it sold, was hoping right out of the field, but no one is showing cash up front, so in the barns it goes !

Crop looks good, though the combine operator, did get into the dirt, jammed the works, got er cleaned out, darned pebble stones in those 2 small loads. Some photos will follow, his fields looked pretty good though the rain did bring up some grass in some areas where it layed down, too bad the price is way down he got 225/ ton last year, lucky he'll get 150/ton, has to haul it now, no bins.

It was interesting to watch that combine, sure like to learn it, but boy there seems to be a lot too it, lot of hills/varying terrain and you have to keep that cutter bar out of the dirt, saw the results of when you don't !

That 150 per ton on oats figures out to $2.40 a bushel. That's a good price this year.

We are lucky to get $2.00 a bushel here in Iowa this year.

Where can I find some of those $2 oats? Only place I can even find oats are raping me $3.25-$3.50. Claim they hve to go to South Dakota to find any. Finally dry enough to get mine cut last week, but the clover seeding in it was 2 feet tall so I just baled it.

We had our oats run on Thursday- on 10 acres we got a whopping 500 bushels. Last year on 6 acres, we got around 1200 bushels of oats. Despite the poor grain crop, there is plenty of straw and the alfalfa underneath looks great considering the drought.

It's raining right now, been raining all night so we might just get 2" of rain this weekend. It should help the corn, but right now it looks horrible. Some of our corn is only 3-4' tall and it's been in the ground since May. We also have some late planted corn that looks pretty good, but it's still got a ways to go.

Up here in SE MN the elevators are paying $1.35 and thats for 36 TW. I only had 14 acres and I feed most of it but I had 425 bu I hauled to the elevator. It was 28 TW and so I only got a bit over $300 for the load.
