Perkins 236 engine or Cummins B series engine .

The 5.9 is a 6 cyl, the 4 cyl version is a 3.9. they are both excellent engines used almost exclusively in Case construction and farm equipment since the mid 80,s. The Perkins also is used in many different applications. I prefer the Cummins but others will differ for very solid reasons. mEl

In all reality the 3.9L and 5.9L Cummins engines are CDC engines and not a true Cummins. Was a joint venture between Case and Cummins. Consolidated Diesel Corporation. Really no comparison between the "Cummins" and the Perkins. Parts are a lot easier and a bit cheaper for the "Cummins" and the reliability and power is definately there.

Depends on what you are using it for.

I love the Cummins B series engines (have three in my dodge trucks) but for use in farm equipment I think the 236 is better. It is tuned down for long hard life and it is a sleeved engine that can be totally rebuilt in frame. The Cummins B series have no sleeves and the block must be machined if the bores get messed up.
