painting galvanize

Hey folks,
I've got several galvanized water tanks that are maybe 60+ years old. Think the galvanize on them is old enough that I can just paint over it? They are on trailer frames that are rusty and need spruced up, just thought I may as well liven the tanks up a little while I'm at it.

Gordo'sanswer has worked well, There is a paint that is specifically for galvanized surfaces as a primer, then it will hold standard paints. Shirwin Williams Or Equal in Germany?? Jim
 

Thanks. I'll check. The venigar idea will probably be fine. These things are just setting on a pasture to drink out of.

Wipe 'em down with vinegar and then paint them. We did that with galvanized gutters when I was a kid.
 
Vinegar will clean rust, primer, the paint. That is the way I am restoring an old windmill.
