lost power steering... where to start

Lost almost all power steering on our old 1066 today. You get just a little at very high idle. Other hydraulics work ok for an old abused loader tractor. Where should I start?

My coworker pointed out to me that on my tractor the problem is probably the filter on the suction side of the pump. I suspect he is right, but have not yet had a chance to check it.

Priority valve , need to check pressure to steering side of pump.Bet a spring in valve broke or wore out. Just a thought.

First place to check is that filter and oil level.

However, if the rest of the system seems okay and plumb normal, front pump is high on the suspect list.

Hello NEIADan,
Allen is right , i would check/replace the filter. If the filter look bad i'm sure the hydraulic fluid needs to be replaced as well.
Check and make sure there are no kinks in the return line. It can be low of fluid and would act the way you describe also.
Good Luck.............Guido.

I worked on a 1566 that lost power steering several times. It kept blowing the O-ring on the steering relief valve. the valve is behind the plug that on the bottom of the MCV.
