Farmall front end

I plan to remove the single front wheel on our farmall 400 and install the wide front I have. Right now I see a problem the bolt pattern for the single front wheel does not match the bolt pattern on the wide front end. What is usually done here. Do I make a adapter plate? Will I have a problem with the stearing? Thanks for any help. stan

If the bolt patten is a different size, then the wide front is for a different size tractor. The smaller tractors had smaller Bolt patterns. I.e. a C tricycle front will not bolt under an M.

Hope this helps. may have to build a different plate and attach the links to it.

Might be, but I dont think it's the difference between the regular and the adjustable width front wheels.

Can you do a little research and see if it's possible to swap your old wheels onto the spindles of the WF?

Stan,

If the wide front has a smaller bolt pattern than the 400, that means that your wide front "probably" came off an H, which has smaller wheel bearings also.

IH always dealt with two sizes; large frame and small frame. They carried this idea clear thru to the end of production on all farm tractors.

Which wide front do you have, IH and which type or aftermarket? If its a original IH type for a 400 only 3 bolts were used to mount steering arm. The steering arm bolt size and spread is different though between SH, 300 and 350 compared to the 400. If its IH tie rods in rear type off the smaller tractors the rear support may be to small also. Steering arm and other parts are sold by aftermarket companies for the IH 400 type wide front.

I have an H - I bought an IH original wide front end with the steering in front and traded in my narrow front - wide front is not aftermarket and it came with an adapter plate that had the spacer tabs in the rear cut off - I put it on and used it for several years, noticed lately that it was sagging off the tractor belly in the rear of the plate and that it was cracked. Upon research I discovered that there are 2 support bars that are also missing from original purchase. There appears to be no way that the adapter plate attaches to the belly of the tractor in the back of the plate (toward rear of tractor). IH manual does not show any brackets - so do the support bars keep it up in the rear or is something missing?

Upon discovering crack in plate, I went back to place where I traded in narrow front and said that if I could either repair plate or put narrow front back on. I had a spare old style narrow front with wider hubs but no rims and he said just swap the hubs from the wide front to the narrow front and when I did I learned that the spindle on the wide front is larger than the spindles on the narrow front. Dealer also did not have clamp on rims for the older style hubs so now I have to find new style hubs/rims/bearings. Can I use wide front hubs with different bearings to fit the narrow front or are the hubs incompatable between wide front and narrow front??? and where can I find the support bars that are missing??
