how deep to pl.ant soybeans? roundup ready, using 2 row jd 71 planter. no idea ive never done this before & just did it. some are barely covered & some are up to 2" or more in heavy black soil. any comments greatly appreciated. about 1.5 aacres worth. used 2 bags.

How come such difference in depth? 2" is pretty deep. If it is dry ground you will most likely be all right. Soybeans are pretty forgiving.

With soybeans your planting depth isn't too critical. From the National Soybean Institute

Seeds should be planted deep enough to meet the moisture and temperature requirements for germination. Planting depth may be determined by variety, and some varieties can emerge from greater depths than others (usually the larger seeded varieties). Typical planting depths are 1-1.5 inches, but if soil is low in moisture or sandy, plant 2 inches deep. In cool, moist soil, seed can be planted 1 inch deep. Seldom should soybeans be planted deeper than 2.5 inches.

Back in the day I remember in the tire tracks our old CaseIH drill wouldn't even put the seeds in the ground, just set them in a groove. Usually half those would still come up... then we ran down those same rows to spray and killed most of them anyway.

If you get a hard rain that makes a crust the deep ones might have a little trouble, but beans have a lot of push when they come up.

Years ago when I was planting with the IH 58 plate planter I had a good unintentional test of what a difference in planting depth can do. I'd been planting beans into disked corn stalks, and had the planter set deeper to get the seed down there to 1 1/2" in the firmer soil. When that field was finished I went to a field that had been fall plowed and it was soft peat to boot so this soil was really soft. I'd planted about 300 feet and decided to check the depth and found it was WAY deep, so I shallowed it up. We didn't have rain after that so the soil was dry, and the deep planted beans came up first by a long shot. It looked like the planter had worked for 300 feet and then stopped. A couple of days later the shallow beans came up but the stand wasn't anything to brag about. The deep planted beans had a near perfect stand. Jim

I shoot for 1 1/2 inches. Some are shallower, some deeper. They all come up. I've never had a problem, in nine years of growing soybeans, with them crusting over so much that they don't push through and when I no till with my Great Plains drill some of them are plainly visible in the slot and they still grow just fine. I never have too little moisture at planting time though. Usually it's the other way around although this year was perfect.

the first time I ever planted soybeans, I planted them too deep (about 2 in.) and then we got a hard rain, followed by sunny weather, and the soil crusted over. Got about a half stand of beans. So I vote for shallow...just buried..maybe a half inch deep
