OT....Opinions of Chevy Malibu and Pontiac G6

Anybody have any experience (good or bad) with these vehicles? I am talking current models. We are thinking of buying a new car and these are what we are looking at. GM haters need not reply. Thanks.

I'm sentimental.........
Malibu was around a long time and they brought it back. Don't see any G6's at classic car shows. Comparing the two, it'd be like showing up for rabbit hunting with a PART beagle while your buddies have purebred.

G6 is a little bigger to me. My brother has one of each, and I cant stand to ride in the Malibu. Its just too small for my height, but I can ride in the G6 all day and not think twice about being comfortable.

Pontiac, potentially will have a poor resale value since they are kaput. I can have a discussion about every Pontiac in the lineup in 1979. I didn't even know what a g6 was,I gather its a sister to Malibu.
I drive American vehicles, but any company that names a car "G6" propably should close their doors.

I have been looking at new cars for a month or so after my last one was totaled out. I have been looking at the Impala or Honda Accord primarily but have also considered the G6 and Malibu as well as the Ford Fusion. My niece just got a G6 with the 4cyl with 10,000 miles on it and she loves it. She lives in So. California with lots of hills on the freeway and she is happy with the performance. The QC manager at our plant was on vacation recently and she rented a Malibu and she said she hated it. These are individual opinions, not mine.

I can tell you that if you check Craig"s List you will find lots of 2~3 year old G6"s for sale. Nowhere near as many Malibu"s. This may be attributable to the G6 outselling the Malibu due to price and targeted market of the younger set.

If you are buying new you are in a good spot. Wait a week or so after GM files for bankruptcy and see what the dealers will be willing to do. In the interim, see if you can get a loaner for a day or so and possibly consider renting for a few days.

I live in West Michigan and can tell you that the dealers here are looking for used prices that are above the Kelly Blue Book. Detroit area dealers are priced far more agressively. By the way, the Ford Fusion has the highest customer satisfaction ratings of anything in its class and is worth a look.

Had 05 malibu, in shop a lot, intermediate steering shaft replaced 4 times in 130k miles, 4 injectors replaced, etc; now have 08 Malibu, 46k miles, no problems, lots of redisgned features, better laid out insturment panel, nicer interior, smoother ride, like it a lot, Mark

Why not consider an Impala. Our 05 has 65K miles and no corrective service has been required.New Battery last year, just now put new tires on it and changed the fluid and filter of the transmission. We have had a lot of Chevys starting with a '57 Bel Air and have always been satisfied with them.2 Pontiac Catalinas which were good cars also in '60 and '63 but the other 11 have been Chevy top of the line. Agreed several have been ugly ducklings but never the less they were good auto's

I commute 130 miles each day so having a comfortable and dependable car is a must for me. I try to get about 300,000 miles before I send it to the salvage yards.

Without a doubt, Buicks have been the best. I now drive a 02 Century with a 6 cylinder engine. I average 29-32 MPG regularly. They are dependable with the normal amount of repairs needed.

Any GM with a 6 cylinder will do you well, decent mileage and longevity.

Best of all is the comfort. If I"m going to be in it for 2 or more hours a day, I"m willing to sacrifice a couple MPG"s for comfort and safety.

Now for trucks, Ford is the only answer!

My boss bought a 2007 G6, for his daughter. He let me drive it and it is a nice car. No problems that I know of with 50K miles on it now.

The Malibu is a good car for the money about $20k I think. (I want this for my next car)

I agree with Organic farmer that the Buicks are the best for Quality, a new Lucerne or Lacrosse is about $27k---But real nice.

Get a Ford.

Ps or one of these little cars.

There is a Buick/Chevrolet dealer in my town and almost everyone buys Buick. The only bad thing I know about the Malibu is they lose their paint in sheets leaving behind the silver undercoat or primer. I think I would get a silver one if you decide to go in that direction. Although it might be due to the cold weather which you might not get. Have you looked at Consumer Reports?

I recall reading somewhere recently in an automotive publication that the '09 Malibu is the best domestic of its class to knock heads with the Camrys and Accords. (Which I consider grossly overrated. When I was a claims adjuster doing automotive service contracts, we found the popular imports had just as many problems as domestics and usually cost a lot more to fix.)

One of my wife's brothers has a Malibu, probably about an '05, with over 100k and no problems that I've heard of. And, believe me, if he had problems I'd have heard about them.

Pontiac G8. Collectors car with actual value in 20-30-40 yrs instead of being just an old clunk.
Seats five in comfort, full sized trunk and drives the rear tires like a car is supposed to.

I've rented G6s on a couple occasions on business trips. They're okay, reasonably comfortable (our longest drive was only about 150 miles, from San Diego to north of LA), but I don't think I'll ever get to where I like the red dash lights. Something about red lights makes me think there's a problem.

As it turns out, I'm driving a G8 right now. Without a doubt the quickest car I've ever driven. And you're right, I think these cars will become collectors items; GM has no plans to rebadge the G8 when they close down Pontiac.

It seems those Aussies know how to build a car.

At work we have a year old G6. Great car. I drive it three days a week on 150 mile trips. Goes good on the highway, quite, nice ride. Ours is one year old with 22,000 miles. Gas mileage stays around 27 MPH as an overall average. On the highway with cruise at 65 you can get over 30. No issues, no strange noises. The car is kept outside all of the time. I would seriously consider buying one if I was in the market for a car.

I have a 2009 malibu, and I love it. I drove several other cars before I made my decision. If you haven't driven one yet, give it a try. Mine has the V-6. I only have 4,500 miles on it so far, and no regrets.
