1953 ALLIS CA oil dripping

I have small oil drip at front of crankshaft when engine gets hot. Someone told me that a "rope" oil seal may be the culprit. What can I do without whole lot of work.....is there an additive that I may use. Thanks

I don't think any additive will fix it. The hub on the damper pulley may have a groove worn into it from the old seal and may require a speedy sleeve to cover that area. I would put this request over on the Allis forum since you will get a lot of responses over there. There may be a new type seal available now too. Hal

Most of those stop leak things cause more problem then they are worth. Last time I tried some of that stuff it caused the oil pump relief valve to stick closed and that in turn blew out seals all over the engine

No rope seals on an Allis CA. The front seal will be a lip seal if that is where the leak is coming from. Best thing to do is get in there with a paint brush and get it cleaned up and watch to see where the oil is coming from. Probly is a seal as they don't last forever. To change it you will have to pull all of the front end off so you can pull the crankshaft pully. The seal can be changed without removing the front cover but most do remove the cover to change that seal. Check the crankshaft well where the seal rides for a grove. You can get a speedy sleeve to repair that.

OK, seal is probably the culprit, but there may be a blocked crankcase breather causing a little pressure build up? There also may be a problem with lubrication type - these old seals may not be appropriate for some modern oils - so be careful that you get a new one that will cope with your type of oil. Rest as the others have said.
