O/T Battery Cores

I just bought a 6 volt battery for one of my tractors this morning and the core for the old battery was $17.00. This was at our local Rural King (Big R) farm supply store.

What are they getting for used batteries at the scrap yards?

Any one else run across this yet?

I couldn't believe it!! I got the old one turned in as soon as I could. Didn't have it with me at the time of purchasing the new battery.

In reply to your post, I think if you didn't turn in a core then they wouldn't charge you to get rid of it.

After thinking about the core charge, it's just a way the EPA keeps track and making the consumer turn in the hazardous material or be charged for it other wise this hazardous material would end up in undocumented locations. The consumer would eat or not worry about a $3 or $5 core charge but $17 is a wake up!!

These are just my thoghts.

If the Scrap Yard pays 3$ per Battery would surprise me. Core Charge is a way EPA keeps you from throwing the Battery in the Dumpster and sending it to the landfill.

On this scrap price web site it shows truck and auto batteries at about 8¢ per pound.

I asked a scrap yard about the price of them in February and decided to keep the ones I had until prices came back up. They were offering about $3-$4 depending upon size.

Here in Texas they charge 3.00 state fee was supposed to pay for cleanup up of battery cutter sites. Get changed whether got core or not. Try to take extra get them to use for fee. works sometimes, sometimes not.

I do part time parts delivery for our local NAPA store. The core charge and refund for batteries are $10 for most car batteries, $15 for bigger commercial batteries and nothing for motorcycle and atv batteries. The lead is recycled. I wonder what the recycle place does with all the acid.

They are bank'n that you don't bring the core back,,, pocket the money (free money) I would bet they make more money from the folks that don't return the core

No more different than charging a core on a new part,,, battery is new ain't it,,, you don't think the price is set on the core return do ya

I will not buy a battery from any parts house that demands I give them my old battery, most of the time I am adding to the fleet, no bad battery. Starter and battery shop won t charge me extra for no core.

Maine adds a 10.00 fee if you dont bring in an old battery when you buy a new one. This makes sure old batteries are recycled.Who needs a 10 buck dead battery on hand.

When scrap prices were out of sight awhile back, I noticed a guy beside the road advertising "I buy batteries"- went home and loaded up about 10 that I had accumulated over the past 20 years and took 'em down to him- he gave me $5 apiece, which is the normal core charge at NAPA, so I figured I came out OK. 17 bucks seems a bit much.
