Manual Trannie in '94 F-250

Hi -

Just wondering what the first symptoms of a transmission failure would be in a Ford 3/4 ton.

I've got a 5-speed with a lot of miles (200K) and the other day, the output shaft nut came off. The yoke didn't get loose, and the u-joint caught the nut, so I just put it back on & tightened it, but the transmission was much hotter than I expected.

I drained the oil and it was clear with no silvery tint or flakes.

It doesn't make any odd noises & is easy to shift.

Do you think I have anything to worry about??

Thanks,
HH

Excessive "clonking" when letting off and then going back on the gas is a sign of a lot of combined bearing and gear play. However, your tranny should be good for another 20 or 50 based on what i'm hearing.

When you change the oil, you should put Lucas heavy duty transmission oil in with your fluid.

I think you are just experiencing the anxiety felt
by someone who has been lucky so far and who
appreciates how many things could go wrong. I
think you should spray some brake kleen on the
output shaft, blow it off with air, and put some
blue locktite on it and drive it another 200k.
Good Luck.

ha...

And the anxiety of hundreds of other equipment failures that I never saw coming!

Hope you are right! :)

Thanks,
HH

I posed this same question a year or 2 ago on this forum. Mine is an 89' F-150 with the Mazda 5 speed stick. I got enough opinions to make me call Lucas and ask them. They (Lucas engineering) said to drain the gearbox and refill with Lucas synthetic or any other GOOD quality synthetic automatic transmission fluid and add 1 quart of Lucas automatic transmission conditioner. Do Not use heavier gear oil. Mine has 214,000 miles on it and so far so good.
The yoke on my rear differential came loose on mine. Replaced the nut with lock tight and torqued to spec, so far so good also.

If the drain plug doesnt have a magnet on it try and find a plug with a magnet. Then run it a while and pull it out and check for metal. If you have a lot of metal on the magnet I would pull it out and put bearings in it if it costed less for bearings than a low mileage one from a junkyard.Once the bearings go out of something it tears up lots more things and even could bust the case.Thats the way we used to do big trucks.A set of bearings for a big truck 10 speed transmission used to cost 300 dollars, probably 5 or 6 or more now.I have no idea what they would cost for a Ford.Probably more than a used transmission.
