Question about renting equipment

Hope there is someone out there that can give some advice on renting equipment. Thinking about renting some dirt working machines. I would like to know the good, bad and you know. Experience is the best teacher and I hope there is someone out there that can teach me the ups and downs.

I usually rent them on a 3 day weekend. The rental places are usually closed on the holiday, so they let you have it free for a day. In other words, you can rent it Friday and return it Tuesday. You would just have to pay for 1 or 2 days rental, provided you didn't exceed 8 or 16 hours during the 5 days.

that would be our business. Are you a home owner or contractor?

If contractor we must have a corp of you insurance on file....... if a homeowner you must buy insurance. If the machine breaks with normal use we repair, If broke from abuse, you upset and damage, get stuck and damage your going to pay.

I have a excavator in the shop right now that was on rent for a week and came back with every sheet metal panal on it including the cab door bent up. Total cost to the customer for repairs is going to be $16,000.

I frequently rent items that I need but dont have. Dollar per dollar its cheaper to rent more expensive things than cheaper items. For example, I can rent a 40 ton tracked excavotor for 2200 a week, but a grapple bucket for a bobcat that I can buy for 1800 is 365 a week. I rent from a couple of local places and from Hertz Equipment (same as the car rental company, just a different division). What I have found is if you dont get at least a week, just hire the job done, its no cheaper. Try holiday weekends (I love the week of Christmas, you get Xmas day, NY Day, and at least one Sunday free, and may even get a break on the weekly price) even Hertz will negotiate off season prices. Oh, and buy the insurance, always always buy the insurance and damage waivers.

What is it with trackhoe operators? 2 relatives bought a used one and the sheet metal is all bent. Of course the previous operator had been dragging one track across the chassis also.

this is a kobelco 330 with only 200 hrs on it. Came back looking like its 20 yrs old bent up and the paint scuffed off it.

I guess I dont understand the free days, 1 week is considered 40 hours, you pay for 40 hours whether you use it or not, plus delivery, and return. Does the insurance pay for any dents, broken windows and just pure damage?

I'm a small contractor who rents specialized tools on occasion. Concrete grinders, floor sanders, sheet rock lifts, post hole diggers etc.
Rental has always allowed me to get the job done on the customers nickel and not my own. It's a good way to go for occasional use.
As a brother, friend to women, all round good guy and homeowner I've had reason to rent Bobcats several times over the years and 2 years ago a mini excavator to dig these footings on my own house. Rental has been money well spent.
For excavator stuff there's an added bonus in that you tell your buddies that you're renting it on Saturday and they'll be over - usually with the beer for afterwards - wanting to get a little seat time on it. You pay your occasional dues to the gang and get your footings dug too.
