went to the local john deere dealer to get a temp gauge for my john deere 60, they wanted $96.00 for it told them no thanks ,I can get one on ebay or this site for around $30.00, thats why deere and company doesn't need any bail out money from the tax payers.

No matter the color they got you. Last spring I needed a lens cover for the insturments on my Ford 4610, mine turned yellow so I couldent read the temp, see the tach or fuel level. I went to the dealer, figured 30 bucks tops for a piece of plastic,,,, nope 70 bucks. I needed it so what could I say. Now that I think about it I shudda looked in the tractor junk yard. Needed a shield fo the knotters on my JD 346 baler,, 92 bucks. Dealer gave me open house price, so it cost me $70 lol :) j

where else can you go and buy parts from a OEM dealer for a 50 yr old machine?

You guys gripe that a part has been discontunied and then grip because its available.

I have a kuhn disk mower that is the same as some NH and JD mowers. Needed a hydraulic cyilinder, was not that big, just a little one way job. Khun dealer over an hour out the way from anywere and NH dealer 3 miles out of the way from home to work. Went to NH dealer, over $300 (I am thinking $342 but it's been a while.) Said no thanks and backed away slowly, Kuhn dealer had one for $190-ish, still alot but not as bad.

Contact Jerry Trcka at Evergreen Restorations. You can get a gauge identical to your original one with a glass face for less than the Deere dealer will charge you for one that is not original. Jerry does very nice work. I have bought several gauges from him and will do so again. Mike

please sell the deere and buy a ford.then pay for oem parts.or go to napa and buy an alemite guage.or if you dont like the heat, get out of the kitchen

Thank you Rob for that response.

Personally I have always lived by a "Buy Once - Cry Once" attitude....if the temp guage on your 50yo tractor breaks and you jsut want something to tell temperature...go get a $20 replacement...but don't go out crying to everybody else because you opted to get a FACTORY ORIGINAL replacement...remember you asked.

Rob in Indiana, so I take it you like to spend 3 times more money than you have to.wow you must work for the oil companies

Next time you have plastic lenses that have yellowed, go to the auto parts store and get one of the kits for clearing up headlight assemblies. Costs about $15.00.

I used one on my truck and it did a pretty good job. Did the lenses on the headlights, parking/turn signals, side lights and tail lights and still got stuff left over.

Wish I had known about it before. We paid $75 each for 2 new headlight assemblies on the the Dodge truck because the lenses had gotten so milky the headlights were dim.

Yeah but, I ve had it the other way around too.

Picked up some baler teeth for my 24T at a fleet supply, went to deere to pick up a muffler and there were the teeth for almost half the price. Needless to say, I bought them and returned the others.

Some years ago, when I overhauled the motor on my 730 deere was the cheapest I found on pistons.

Lived by your rule, "buy once and cry once" many times. As time passes the sting gradually disappears. The hope is that it gives an American a decent paying job, although no doubt that much goes to those that have much and deserve little. My attitude is that is much better to pay a little more and give someone a job which provides some satisfaction, rather than squeeze every penny and cycle more thru a charity that otherwise needs to support them.

If you are going to buy the $30 one you may as well save your money and go without because they are junk. Buy the Evergreen restorations gauges.

I don't have time to look for it again now . I read it on Ag Talk . They had a link to a news article .
It was telling that Case IH NH was being forced to take 3 billion to pay Fiat so they could buy Chrysler like Obammy said .
They told JD took 2 billion after they turned bigger profits than Chevron .

The artical I saw explained the Deere could take a goverment operating loan at a lower % than they had with commerical credit lines.

They have to repy it but it was several % points lower than the credit line they had been using. Sounded like sound business practice to me to use the operating $$ with the lowest rate.

Does sound high, but a real bargain compared to the Category III pin I priced at the local Deere dealer. This simple 1 7/16" diameter by 4.75" pin used to attach a quik coupler was only 106$. simple plate welded to one end with a 3/8 hole. There is a lot more to your gauge than that pin. Seems we have to shop for parts like a used car or interest at the bank. You need to squawk a bit to keep them honest.

Because the commercial credit markets are screwed up. Lenders are worried that Deere's customers may not be able to pay back loans that JD credit makes on tractors, combines, etc. Deere needs that money to sell stuff. Normally, they would borrow it, in big chunks, lend it out in little chunks, and make money in the process. If they can't finance it, most of the time they can't sell it. The government wants Deere to keep making stuff, selling it, and employing a few people in the process.
